Can someone explain the appeal of spending a lot of money for a car that doesn't look good or perform well?

You don't have to get it, but comparing performance of a brand new modern car to a car 17 years its senior...

To add to the many replies above.

I also think it has to do with the age of Revscene tbh, for many of us, it was the M3 that we grew up dreaming about

at least to me it was, it came out the same year that I graduated from elementry school. Being old enough that your parents finally letting you to go to the local public library to read up on car magazines after school. Hahaha yea, the struggle was real...

Of course you knew about the 911, the Ferrari and the lot (but that's all just fantasy for most folks). Reading all the rave reviews about the M3 was awesome, and seeing the CSL beating out the 360 Modena on paper was unthinkable. I still remember telling all my friends about it when the first road/track tests came out.

So nostalgia plays a huge roll. It is still on my list of the car to own.

Sure better cars have since come out, and yea the game moved on... I dont think anything can touch Tesla in everyday city traffic....but you asked anyone on RS, and most will tell you, they want a
- no torque (comparatively speaking) NA high rev power plant
- good old close ratio 6 speed with none of that auto rev match shit
- rwd on a well balanced platform

To each their own though =)

Thanks for listening to me rant... now... just need to convince the wife....

I only dream about owning a Lada
Maybe a unimog....

I'm just gonna keep beating on that dead horse.......

I didn't care for the E46 when it was available for sale because I thought it was a garish looking car. I preferred the 330ci ZHP more(but hey what's a grade 11 kid got to talk about preferring a certain BMW?)

Now that I've "learned" more about cars, the E46 was a supercar wrapped in a pedestrian body.

Comparing it to a modern turbo car is very unfair and a modern M3 would runs circles and circles around a Stinger.
The E46 made 300+ hp in an era where a Mustang V8 only made 260. The contemporary Ferrari 360 and Corvette Z06 made just under 400hp.

I've driven one and the S54 is damn powerful for what it is. There hasn't really been anything made since like that and at that price point. I'm not a huge fan of the E90 body style and I'm not really a V8 guy though it follows a similar idea.

It's the same argument you would apply to a Miata or S2000. Why? Because there's nothing like it and you should try driving one if you haven't.

When the E46 M3 came out in 2001 it was really something else. Shit all over a b5 s4 or a c32 amg. i still remember the magazine shootout between a Z06, m3, and boxster s. Z06 won all the performance categories but it was so close and the m3 is so much more comfortable it still won

westopher 10-14-2021 08:01 AM

The m3 was the 911 for someone that needed a backseat back then.
Also, this is ugly?:suspicious:

tofu1413 10-14-2021 08:59 AM

i think its the prettiest 3 series platform to date ........ well of course next to a facelift late model E30.

its the perfect sized sports car too. not too big, not too small.

The e46 M3 is special because they don't make a M3 like that no more. If they still did, im sure there'll be less hype and they will be much cheaper....

Its stuck with an old BMW simple formula: balanced chassis, high revs and very responsive inline six that can be used everyday.

Post E9X era turbo M cars lacked that on centre steering feel of the older cars and the exhaust note....... just farts and burps... not the inline six inductions noises we grew up with.

The rust or an accident kills them before the drivetrain gives out they’re cheap to fix and rarely anything major goes bad

snowfarmer 10-16-2021 10:59 AM

IMO this is not a good deal.

- first things first, it's an auto trans not a 6MT
- 177,000 km is NOT low km. for a car like this, sure the general average is 20K/year but that includes general use cars that do DD duty. For this car, 177km is a shit ton of km
- next, it doesn't appear that the timing chain service has been done, if this hasn't been done, run away...quickly.
- he discounted it because "people complain about the chain." Err no, the issue is not people complaining, it is because failed timing chain guides will mechanically total the car and it's a question of when, not if the timing chain guides will fail.
- about the timing chain service, the ad says "it won't need to be done for another 4-5 years, if ever." What the hell is he basing this assertion on? Hopes & prayers? Maybe he consulted a psychic?

If the seller presents an invoice for the timing chain service, then yes, it won't need to be done for another 4-5 years and this might be a good buy. As it currently sits, I'd recommend a hard pass.

How much is a timing chain? I know in e39s once you do the guides, you might as well do valley pan etc all in that area and it's an easy $3000-$4000. BMW they said FeelsBadMan
