I was texting him tonight. He told me everything is great on the car other then the drivers door. He said he replaced the door and just needs paint.

It seems very sketchy. He wouldn't give me his address and told me to text him tomorrow before I come to see it. And I also asked about pictures of the drivers side and he didn't send me any...

I guess we'll see what it's like tomorrow. I plan on lowballing him with cash and see what happens.

Decent buy. Seeing how most eg's go for around 2000, not bad for 3500 with a b16 swap.

There is prob lots of rust and possibly other "body work" since he keeps mentioning it. How difficult is it to clean the sunroof drainage line?

Another good buy:
2006 Honda coupe

1989 BMW E30 325i

Pretty cool if not excessively cheap

^^awesome! If it wasn't red I'd be a player. Fun car for under $10K but $13K with the wheels is a stretch.

Jgresch 01-07-2015 09:53 AM

Just a heads up for anybody who sees this ad thinking they're getting a $2000 seat for half the price, the seat is a replica.

I know this is the "good buys" thread, but didn't know where else to post for visibility...

I'm not too familar. How do you know this seat is a fake?
I'm going to be in the market for a seat in a few weeks and it will be good to know.

Material looks like crap, so faded. The "low max" stitching is done very poorly. The Bride stitching on the headrest isn't centred and is a bit too high.

...and it used to be mine lol

underscore 01-07-2015 10:54 AM

Not sure if this is the best place to ask, but a buddy of mine is looking at a 1999 CLK 430 with 223k on it for $4000. To me this screams maintenance money pit but I figured I'd ask you guys to be sure.

That car has been for sale for a long, long time - even posted in this thread a few months ago

So what ended up happening? The add has been deleted so hopefully you ended up getting it.

at $10,900 and in great mechanical condition, this would be pretty well perfect if you were looking for a driver.

Edit: the ad was flagged, I can't fathom why.

Wild_Penguin 01-07-2015 11:14 PM

M3 UPDATE:
To start with I'm torn on what to do if I should buy it or not here is why.

Pros:
-Seems like a nice car over all.
-From what I could see the Subframe is not cracked and has had the foam recall done(I pulled up the carpet in the trunk) Couldn't get under to check the mounts.
-The Leather is in good order not cracked or faded(way to much Armorall on the seats, making them super greasy)
-All the electrics work (windows all move fast, top works, heated seats, all the LEDs on the dash/climate control work)
-Comes with stock rims

The sketchy "stuff":
-He told me he had all the paper work for the car, but won't show me. (I may be a nice guy, But he was super busy answering his phone/two other guys showed up to take a look at it)
-Says he is the 2nd owner and he has only owned it for 2,000K's and has done 0 work to it in that time no oil change nothing.
-He's in the business of selling cars I take it, He had a 70's (I think) VW bus for sale as well. Plus he told me he would take trades for the M3 and looked right at my car (gen2 Mazdaspeed 3)
-I just get a bad gut feeling from the guy.

Cons:
-Shifts into gear very hard(worst then my FD, which I thought was the worst shifting car ever). I don't know if that is just an M3 thing. As I have drive 3 other E46 M3's in my life all SMG's.
-at WOT in 2nd gear it seemed very slow/sluggish compared to the other E46's I have driven.(maybe due to the ugly heavy chrome rims)
-Told me he has to "top up" the oil after every couple long drives. But told me it doesn't leak anything at all.
-The Drivers door is white due him opening his door and a lady hit it at very low speed in front of his house (I do believe that story as he lives on a very small street and we almost got hit when I was looking at it)
-Has a aftermarket old school early 2000's flip out head unit.
-Plus he told me he wouldn't take a penny less then 10k. and was hoping for a bidding war.

Over all it "seems" like a okay buy. I'm 50/50 on it right now, and just going to sleep on it. It maybe sold by now anyway. When I was there two other guys showed up to look at it (they looked like used car dealers) and his phone wouldn't stop ringing when I was looking at it.

westopher 01-07-2015 11:47 PM

From the sounds of it, I'd rather pay 17-18k and get a good one than 10k and get that. Stuff adds up very quick.
Burning oil, shitty shifting, sluggish feel and in need of paint work, not to mention a bad vibe from the seller. As cheap as it is, thats a scary proposition. If you are considering it at the very least get a PPI and see if there is merit to the worries. At the very least it needs paint work and absolutely every fluid in the car changed, and likely a valve adjustment.

prolepsis 01-08-2015 12:21 AM

I agree with what westopher said, especially since you don't have a good gut feeling about the seller.

Most M shifters feel a little rubbery (and longish throws), but shouldn't be hard to get into gear. Sounds like the fluid hasn't been replaced, or there may be some other issue at hand.

When I bought my e92 M3, the seller was an older gentleman and he took good care of the car--I could tell that he really liked the car, based on how the car was treated and his knowledge of little things here and there. Having said that, I searched for a few months before I found the right car and seller. E46 M3s aren't super common, but they aren't super rare either. The right one will be out there for you.

And ditto on the PPI. Good luck with your search.

jackp0t 01-08-2015 12:22 AM

To a person that's looking for a project has a daily car and likes to tinker around (Diy) that m3 was perfect.
Its 10k and a used car its bound to have problems it could happen the next day or the next year

dared3vil0 01-08-2015 08:22 AM

Yes this is a bit overpriced but is SO rare;
