Has some kind of aftermarket centre console in it with cupholders too.

If you can get it up on a lift to take a peek at the torque boxes and they look sharp this thing is a fantastic deal. Either repaint the outside to a better matching colour or re-do the interior (vinyl recover kits for the seats on these are CHEAP). Has somewhat rare turn signals in the hood... might have front discs too need to see the pedal or up close of the front wheels.

Isn't a 1960's mustang for $10k CAD a steal running in almost any condition?

Pretty much, though if the torque boxes or frame are rusted you're out another $10k right off the bat so it's not for everyone.

That's wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy too nice for 10k. Common guys lol.

You can't even get a Miata for 10k anymore, that thing has got a brand new interior.

Sucky time to be a car enthusiast looking for a fun project.
I keep considering different cars to use for work trips to the lower mainland until I can get a GR Corolla (so I don't have to keep using rental cars). But with everything being crazy to begin with, anything even vaguely new and interesting enough to use is even crazier right now. I know I could trade it in later on which would kinda cancel it out but with my luck the supply shortages will end right before I trade it and used values will drop again lol. Not to mention paying more taxes when I buy it.

The Sonata I had this week was at least a lot better than I expected (and way better than the Equinox I had last time), but still, it's a Sonata.

Just get an e46 and throw $5000 at it for mods and repairs? E36 are rarer now and more expensive. E46s can be had for around $5000 which is old civic Integra prices before pandemic

A manual e46 of any variety is definitely a bargain for a driver these days. Sub 10k, BMW (lack of, but also actually good in other aspects) build quality, RWD, around 200hp, easy to work on, safe.
If you can't turn a wrench, don't bother, but EVERY diy under the sun is documented thoroughly and parts aren't crazy.

I'd hedge a bet that the e46 will be the next e30-esque modern classic.

bonus points for a manual zhp/zcp one.

I don't mind DIY work, but I need a reasonable level of reliability and 17+ years old might be pushing it. Messing up the timeline of a work trip because I'm stuck on the side of the Coq or the Crowsnest is no bueno.

My daily is 24 years old. It’s a blend of luck, skill, and copious amounts of money on things that aren’t broken, but you think might break. It’s basically new at this point anyways lol.

Around town I'll daily anything, hell most of my vehicles have been pretty shitty but gotten me around fine. I have no problem just using my Celica for that. It's the needing to drive 350+km to a customer and then head back the next day that I have doubts about lol.

Fwiw an e46 is very reliable if you do preventative maintenance. And no, only doing half the job doesn't count.

Bicbaws will single handedly raise the e46 market by crippling supply over the next 10 years.

I recently got back into the E46 game with a 330 'vert that I picked up for under $5K (which is what you should pay, but not what the market value is). I've been driving modern cars for the last 7 years and when I drove the E46 home, it was like going back in a time machine. I felt the same way when I picked up my late E30 325is 12 years ago. Of course, the cooling system leaks and there are tonnes of shadow codes in the DME, but the thing still drives and you can still service it using common hand tools.

I test-drove a modern cheapskate enthusiast BMW (228/6 speed) recently. I wanted to like it because it sort of looked like an E36 and it was right-sized, but the steering felt lifeless (even in Sport+).

Several years ago, when I was more active in the local BMW community, there were some who predicted that E46s would never achieve classic status because there were too many of them. With the market the way that it is and influencing hubs like Bring a Trailer/YouTube, those predictions turned out to be wrong. After driving a modern BMW, I can see why. E46s are the modern E30.

How are the e46 tops? Do they leak or have lots of issues? I prefer the hard top of e90 but then when I had my friend's for a week it was quite squeaky and had lots of rattles.

My E46 has rattles with the top down, but I don't know if the top is the source for them. I don't really care because this is a summer/project car that I bought as a nostalgia item.

The top has held up over 21 years and it appears that there have been no leaks over its life. There is however a tear in the headliner which is caused by broken plastic pieces (batwing) which is a common problem on the E46.
