The fact that they're quick AND practical is what gets me.

Those seats... :sweetjesus:

Is that the V8 with the timing chains in the back of the motor? If so, be prepared for an expensive timing chain-system-rebuild at some point! Audi engineers and penny pinchers really screwed up that motor.

ugh dave.... are you referring to this? :( :

CCA-Dave 01-08-2015 11:29 AM

Nope, that's the front-end timing belt and chain model. If you can believe it, that is the preferred setup! The engines with the timing chain problem are the 2003-2008 (B6/B7) S4's, and they make the video you posted look like an easy cakewalk.

Note that the engine is out of the car to access the timing chains:

^ It looks like there's a total of three chains back there? holy overcomplicated batman, whoever invented that was a sadistic bastard.

vitaminG 01-08-2015 12:14 PM

apparently the chains are ok, its just the tensioners and pulleys that fail.

M3 UPDATE:
To start with I'm torn on what to do if I should buy it or not here is why.

Pros:
-Seems like a nice car over all.
-From what I could see the Subframe is not cracked and has had the foam recall done(I pulled up the carpet in the trunk) Couldn't get under to check the mounts.
-The Leather is in good order not cracked or faded(way to much Armorall on the seats, making them super greasy)
-All the electrics work (windows all move fast, top works, heated seats, all the LEDs on the dash/climate control work)
-Comes with stock rims

The sketchy "stuff":
-He told me he had all the paper work for the car, but won't show me. (I may be a nice guy, But he was super busy answering his phone/two other guys showed up to take a look at it)
-Says he is the 2nd owner and he has only owned it for 2,000K's and has done 0 work to it in that time no oil change nothing.
-He's in the business of selling cars I take it, He had a 70's (I think) VW bus for sale as well. Plus he told me he would take trades for the M3 and looked right at my car (gen2 Mazdaspeed 3)
-I just get a bad gut feeling from the guy.

Cons:
-Shifts into gear very hard(worst then my FD, which I thought was the worst shifting car ever). I don't know if that is just an M3 thing. As I have drive 3 other E46 M3's in my life all SMG's.
-at WOT in 2nd gear it seemed very slow/sluggish compared to the other E46's I have driven.(maybe due to the ugly heavy chrome rims)
-Told me he has to "top up" the oil after every couple long drives. But told me it doesn't leak anything at all.
-The Drivers door is white due him opening his door and a lady hit it at very low speed in front of his house (I do believe that story as he lives on a very small street and we almost got hit when I was looking at it)
-Has a aftermarket old school early 2000's flip out head unit.
-Plus he told me he wouldn't take a penny less then 10k. and was hoping for a bidding war.

Over all it "seems" like a okay buy. I'm 50/50 on it right now, and just going to sleep on it. It maybe sold by now anyway. When I was there two other guys showed up to look at it (they looked like used car dealers) and his phone wouldn't stop ringing when I was looking at it.

If that many people are looking at the M3 and are not buying it something is up and wrong with it. I say listen to your gut and don't go with it because by the sounds of things this good deal will turn into a money pit.

Yup, there's a solid Jalopnik post regarding this.

Here?s Why The V8 Audi S4 Is An Awful Used Car

SumAznGuy 01-08-2015 02:23 PM

I wonder if this car is that bad that no one has bought it at this price.
It's been for sale for at least 2 months.

Ya I emailed at the end of November. People are just scared of the "it needs a tune" line. At that price the people buying it aren't willing to pay someone to do it. Personally, I think it's a decent price still.

hud 91gt 01-08-2015 02:45 PM

I'd sell the turbo junk, and have a great quick cheap track/auto car.

As long as the cooling system is maintained like clockwork. Well known for failed HG.

Ya it was in Fernwood. He had it parked on the street on Gladstone just off of Fernwood ave. I decided not to go for it. I listened to my gut feeling about everything.

Also to be honest I'm not dead set on a M3. I have just been looking around for a weekend car for awhile now. The laundry list of cars I've been looking for is very long.

I bet the guys that looked at it after me bought it. They looked like the guys who run that used car dealer on Johnson street. I bet we'll see it back up online soon after paint for 16-ish.

^ The ad for the teg says it's tuned for 10,000rpm's... I don't know much about those motors but that doesn't sound healthy...

flagella 01-08-2015 10:26 PM

The ad sounds fucking retarded period.
