A clean E46 wagon on the North Shore for a reasonable price. Seems like a good candidate for a manual swap: https://vancouver.craigslist.org/nvn...493933070.html |

Everyone is shocked when it happens, the person who does it turns out to be nuts, the neighbours all say the guy was such a quiet and nice person, when you open up their garage you find all kinds of other transmissions in there, and while most people say we should ban this shit all we do is offer our thoughts and prayers.
There's also a cluster of people who insist that the solution is that we need to get more people to drive manual cars. We need to teach janitors, teachers, postal workers how to work a clutch.

manual swap on an e46 is 90% sourcing the parts and 10% doing the work
it's so well documented at this point. good shop would do it in a day. first time DIYer would do it in a weekend or 2 because they only did 75% of the 90% statement from above

For regular folk who doesn't have the tools or knowledge, how much will a shop charge? Like $5000 plus parts? Best I can do is try to source the parts. |

After manual swapping a car, I'd only do it again with access to a full parts car. There's enough components involved that it's a PITA to source them all individually. And I'd never buy a car that someone else swapped.

Rather save for a better platform.

Trans swap is all research. If it’s been done a million times, follow the guide. The hardest part will be bending and fitting a line.

I’d love to manual swap mine, but other cars take the fun money. That said, not being fast, they are an exceptional “only” car for an enthusiast that doesn’t have big money. Daily Driving a manual RWD wagon for well under 10k is not a shitty proposition. Still good steering feel and the KWs on mine really sharpen it up.

ngl, I've always preferred my cars manual... but especially with age... I get pretty fuckin cranky if I spend a day with my MR2 or manual Lexus... sometimes just want to get in the other Lexus and only use 1 foot.
I was daydreaming the other day about selling off a bunch of my cars and buying a used Porsche 911... and was thinking to myself that I am totally not sure whether I would try to find a manual or get the PDK... ask me a few years ago, no question manual... but I honestly don't know now. Any of my friends that have this type of vehicle now all have PDK or equivalent... in the case of a couple that have 911's they said they never have a second thought about it. One of them lives in Los Angeles though, so that's very very understandable in his case lol

I'm still sus about the reliability of the dct these days, I don't think anyone ever rebuilds them so you just have a ticking time bomb? Then Manuel swap?

My sadness with driving automatics is how poorly programmed most of them are even in sport mode. Is it asking too much to be in the right gear coming off a boring every day right turn? Like drop down a few gears as I come off the brakes?
My old TSX had gears that were too long but the programming was pretty good - it downshifted quick off the corners - while my RDX's 10 speed is just trash when it comes to being in the right gear coming off a corner b/c it ends up stepping down 4-5 gears (7 down to 2) which takes an eternity.

2 cars? Daily should definitely be an auto. Single car? I’d have a tough time choosing PDK, but if I “commuted” I think it would be a no brainer.

If you stick within the rated power limits of the transmission they’re generally fine, especially the 2nd gen and later transmissions from VWAG. Quote:

I had a Cayman GTS for a track session and the transmission was basically in the gear that was optimum almost every time and never faltered.

I find if you are driving aggressively like at a track it's usually fine, but around town at lower speeds the transmissions get very confused.
I want my manual 99% of the time. When I am sick though, can I have an automatic please.
