Probably cheaper than 4runner

tofu1413 02-13-2023 10:39 AM

it does have a certain cooler factor than a 4runner.

Retro modern looks, yet retained legendary off road capability.

one of those NEO classic cars that actually delivered (as designed to) but of course sales wise, it was a bit of a flop at the end, hence why there were fewer later models out there and they've held their values seemingly.

It was the impractical and quirky sibling to a 4Runner that came out at the wrong time just before the 2008 recession. Towards the end of its lifecycle, I believe the dealerships were trying to give them out and they still had a hard time selling them. What made it unpopular then (retro looks, non-conforming design, poor practicality) is now the reason people clamor for one today.

The pricing on these bottomed out in 2017 and have just ballooned since - I found a 2014 Trail Teams edition back then but didn't want to recklessly spend as a fresh grad.

I think the FJ is Tacoma platform, not 4-Runner

I thought it was closer to a Land Cruiser Prado where 4Runner gets its frame from as well.

Here's what I found on Wiki:
Quote:

The fifth-generation 4Runner was unveiled at the State Fair of Texas on September 24, 2009, and went on sale months later. It is built on the same platform as the J150 series Land Cruiser Prado/Lexus GX and the FJ Cruiser.[20] Despite being built in Japan, it was only produced in left-hand drive and it was not sold there or any other RHD markets.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_4Runner

Some parts are shared with a Tacoma however:
Quote:

Toyota sources many components from other vehicles to produce the FJ including shared engines and transmissions found in the Tacoma, Tundra and 4Runner as well as suspension components used in the Prado, Hilux, Tacoma, and 4Runner.[6]: 99

Basically the same situation as the Honda Element. It's developed a cult following.

twitchyzero 02-13-2023 05:57 PM

FJ not bad, VehiX better

FJs are far more capable though. Towing, off-road etc but I get the cult comment.

bcrdukes 02-14-2023 10:24 AM

While on the topic of the FJ, why did Toyota discontinue it for North America?

One of those vehicles people didn't want until it was already gone... poor sales figures after the first couple of years... and also overlanding and off-roading in general really experienced an uptick in popularity after it had ceased production:

FJ Sales Figures:

2014 14.718
2013 13.131
2012 13.655
2011 13.541
2010 14.959
2009 11.941
2008 28.668
2007 55.170
2006 56.225

tofu1413 02-14-2023 11:53 AM

tbh, I wished they built some kind of suzuki Jimny over.

little short wheel base, 4cylinder offroader little guy.

that'll be great.

JDMDreams 02-14-2023 12:41 PM

I wonder why mitsubishi stopped selling pajero or not import their pick ups. It seems crazy popular in Asia.

68style 02-14-2023 01:51 PM

Small pick-ups built outside North America are never imported, USA has the 25% chicken tax in place to protect their trucking industry.

You only see import trucks at all now because they build them at USA factories.

donk. 02-14-2023 02:01 PM

You ain't wrong, they sell them here in NZ, brand new ones are 40k. They look pretty sweet, and come in extreme colors too, bright orange / lime / forest green

I think they would do well in Canada, minus the fact American manufacturers probably pushed them out

I love the Jimny and its cult following.

The G Wagon kit brings my inner ricer out.

JDMDreams 02-14-2023 04:10 PM

Wonder if we can get them from Mexico?

68style 02-15-2023 07:22 AM

Sure... when they're 15 years old haha

underscore 02-15-2023 08:02 AM

I was trying to find a NAFTA loophole to bring up a diesel Hilux a couple years back. Best I could work out it might technically be possible but you needed dual citizenship because you had to have a Mexican citizenship to buy a vehicle in Mexico.

987 cayman S, 143k kms, 6spd, 26g

whitev70r 02-15-2023 09:08 PM

Here is another ... 06 Cayman S, (auto though), less kms at 88K, $26.9K. Burgundy and with 2 sets of wheels. Seems like the above is a good price but not the only one in that range.

2002 Honda Civic SIR - $5,000 (Port Kells)

https://images.craigslist.org/01717_...t2_600x450.jpg

Gerbs 02-16-2023 08:16 AM

The SIR was so underwhelming, felt the same as a base RSX. Not sure why it's so fun.
