Speaking of VW engineering, is this a good rare buy? 08 VW R32, 171.5K miles, Auto/DSG, AWD, $9450 US. I thought they were all manual? Is this the VW 3.2L engine that is a ticking time bomb with the timing chain?

edit - US posting .. missed that, thx Roastpuff

Stance looks a little funny too. Buyer beware.

No, that's the 4.2 V8. The 3.2 VR6 is a fine motor, but you can't get a lot of power out of it without doing turbo kits. Sounds great though!

The Mk5 R32 was DSG only. You're thinking of the Mk4 R32 which was manual only IIRC.

Rare yes, good buy, debatable... outside of the engine being really nice to listen to and rev, it was quite heavy and slow.

Also, that's a US listing - so more like $13-14K + import duties (made in Germany) + tax, and also 240,000KM once converted from miles.

Thanks for the concise insights. Didn't even see it was from Bellingham .. not sure how I missed that. So it's also in miles.

^^ they're really not. Prob the best sounding stock "economy" car of it's era. The 3.2 VR is a gem. First gen DSG is pretty junk though. That's too many miles for me though - no matter the price.

if you really want one, they were available with a 3rd pedal ROW. Here's one in japan (w OEM wingbacks )

https://www.beforward.jp/volkswagen/...24/id/4531981/

note: not a "good buy" just an example. for 23k i'd be looking at an MK6 Golf R

They're not horrible, but they're not hardcore track cars, it was more of a GT car. Like I said, not a lot of power unless you go turbo but the VR6 sounds soooo good.

They definitely looked cool for the era - the aluminium trim and the center exhausts before everyone else started doing it really made it stand out. Wish the new Golf Rs had a bit more visual flair than just a badge.

Do those guys get it inspected in BC for that price? Or is it just unloaded in New West and the buyer is responsible for the rest?

no inspection - as you stated, you're on your own after it lands.

If you want that motor, just buy a VR6 Jetta for 1/5th the price, and is very commonly found in a stick.

Big big big premium on that AWD and bad dsg imo.

i've owned every VR6.

there's something very special about the factory 3.2. I blew away a PCA auto-x once w just the sound (certainly not the speed). Every single person wanted to know what the car was and how it sounded so good.

Mk4 R32's are trading for huge money (i won't even post todays BAT result). The way into this very low production car is the Mk5 (for now). These aren't granny's jettas - they're more like homologation specials

I considered an Mk5 japan car when I was shopping for an Mk6 R. Ultimately we ended up w our 7.5 instead.

The 3.2 VR6 was never in a Jetta, that was the 2.8. The 3.2 is a more special motor as it was made for performance, rather than the 2.8 which is just the normal "big engine" choice for the Jetta of that age. The 3.2 revs more freely, sounds better, and is smoother IMO.

Honestly the best application of the 3.2 VR6 was in the Beetle RSi or the Audi TT. The TT Mk2 with the 3.2 VR6, manual 6-speed and Quattro is the one I'd have but they're super rare - made only between 2008 and 2009 in small numbers. Unicorn.

I had a mk3 2.8 VR6 back in the day and did the "suitcase" muffler delete, sounded good. Cheap and quick way to improve the exhaust note.

Got the sports seats on there making it an even more rare wagon. Interior looks pretty darn clean for a 15 year old car with beige leather.

Arctic Metallic on Grey Dakota leather. Pretty unusual but cool combo.

Very fair ask.

There’s a 330i swapped 325 wagon for sale, slick top for about 2-3k more too.
