id probably spring on the SC430. A bit more unique than than the CLK's.. and the V8's run like clock work.

I would prefer the latter model wheels though.

Miata is always the answer.

Having owned a NC, I don't see a huge problem with a soft top as it's going to be down most of the time anyways. If you own a SLK/CLK/SC you would have a poor weather car as well.

Sort of want but it looks beat, I wonder how much it will take to over night one from Japan, will probably be cheaper as this one needs at least a few thousand and has rust.

Lexus never seems to really appeal to enthusiasts. Well at least not the hardcore kind anyways. Even the LFA went unsold for many years after production as nobody wanted a 350k Lexus.

Their entire enthusiast lineup reminds me of the mk4 supra. Wasn’t the fastest, didn’t handle the best, had average looks for the time. But eventually people figure it out that they are good platforms to build whatever the hell you want.

Sc430 can be modified to this extreme if you so desire

I think the Lexus RC-F fits this description. It's "good" at most things, but not amazing at anything other than not breaking.

theyre good cars, but rarely do they feel special.

IS500 is great, but it doesn't feel that special, besides the noise it makes. It is one solid car though.

they always seem to miss a bit of the fizz or special sauce, and that goes for majority of the Toyota product in general.

I think the best term is they are usually "Clinical"

I can't quite think of any other mid-2000's 4 seater verts that compare. Maybe a E46 330ci.
It's hard to beat a 330ci convertible if you need 4 seats.

Cheap-ish parts, tons of enthusiast support, and it's the right size.

this

i feel the safest buy is the E46 cab.

Abundance of parts and well documented throughout the years.

just need to tackle the typical gaskets and cooling system. They're great cars and still look very pretty driving around today!

^ Yep can't wait to get back my E46 cabrio back on the road next month and to take my wife and kids on some cruises to the ice cream shop and the beach.

Over the next few weeks, I've got a fuel filter, new belts, new pulleys, new vacuum hoses, and new intake boots to install. Over the winter, I installed new Vanos seals, rebuilt the Disa, installed new rear brakes and the e-brake, changed the power steering reservoir, and replaced the diff and brake fluids. Nearly all parts are available from Rock Auto and YouTube is full of DIYs for every job.

I love convertibles. It’s the closest thing to riding a motorcycle and you don’t need all this damn gear. Miata is always the answer. It’s both engaging, cheap to operate and cheap to own. Only problem is it’s tiny. Otherwise it’s perfect one car solution.

I honestly don't think the Miata is that great given the price. A used crappy NA is now touching 6-9k with 200,000km on it with all the rockers eaten away and the soft top is has more holes in it than my underware.

You can get a FRSBRZFT86 for 13.

You're getting a way better car for not a whole lot more. I drove a sorted-out NA for a summer. It's good for 4-5k, but you're not getting one for 4-5k that doesn't need another 3k of work and every quarter pannel is missing.

^^ yea I was in the market for a Na like 5-6 years ago, they were already $5 to 9k. After driving one, with all the nvh I realized it wasn't for me at that price. You could still easily get ep3, gsr, e46 for like $4000 back in those days. Even a e90 at $7000 is a much better deal.

NAs are pretty overpriced now (NBs are too). I think the sweet spot are the NCs which still drive like modern cars and are reasonably cheap.

https://www.autotrader.ca/a/mazda/mx...=100&modalXS=1

This one makes me a bit sad cause 5 years ago I had a chance to pick up one of these up for about $11k on the island. I just had no need for it at the time. I LOVE this limited edition version and a mint one probably goes for $20k now.

In any case a Miata is a totally different use case than a BRZ IMO. I'm sure smiles per miles is similar but to me they're totally different and only comparable b/c they're kinda cheap and very cheerful.

I think its that50skid on youtube who does literally the BEST diy videos I have seen for anything. That guy is a national treasure. You just need to buy a socket set and subscribe to his channel and you will never need to take the e46 in short of a motor rebuild if you overheat it.

I toooooo am about to install a whole wack of parts on my e46 (headlight refresh plus updated HID retrofit, hood and trunk latches, door carriers, hood pull, all gaskets and cooling system, fluids, plus wheel spacers for stock 135 wheels that are freshly refinished ) super fun and not insane to work on, YouTube is stocked full of videos….Plus I get to tell the wife I’m being productive and “cleaning up the garage” to get away.

(Definitely priced higher since it's at Euro Pacific. Might be able to luck out & score one ~$10k cheaper private sale.)

CLK500 2005-2006 is the perfect 4-seat convertible while keeping the price resonable. Bulletproof m113 engine. Simple car to work on for DIYers. The hydraulic cylinders for the CLK's top may leak at some point but the SC430 certainly isn't free from problems with its top mechanism.
