Rolling up to highschool in your 92 civic si with 250kms, steelies, rusted rear QPs, for 700$-2000$, and everyone GEEZIN at you because your one of the few kids BALLING, with a car in grade 10/11
"Haaaaaaay donk, wanna go for a drivveee?"
Felt goooooooooood
Rotten ronnies flex block / lunch runs, i was running a business buying 20-40cheeseburgers and selling them for double the price. I gotta find the pic and upload it here
And then there was the rich kids rolling up with their mommies bmws and newer jeeps

Kids these days just Uber everywhere, the real world makes them too anxious to drive. Putting buddy kids though college with it.

That's so true, everyone I know that's < 27 as a doesn't drive. Every dood sub 25, only 10-20% drive lol. Cost is too high | Bro when a Civic is easily 35K MSRP, an Accord 45K MSRP and an Odyssey pushing 60K... It sucks lol

Roll back the clock to when I was that age and at least the people I knew couldn't afford any of the cool classics that were a decade+ older than we were. In high school it was any cheap POS we could get our hands on that was usually a couple years older than us, then into our 20's slightly cool stuff a couple years younger than we were.
The crappy thing is (being lazy and assuming you're 24) that puts you into that dead zone of the early 2000's. Off the top of my head all I can think of from 02 is the Celica and the RSX lol. Plus the used market being fucky plus inflation and you've got a lot more against you than we did.

you're right, there isn't that many good choices in the early-mid 2000's that are still running today, and are under 10k.
Weirdly, the generation of kids coming up now have parents who are all matured in the 80's and 90's and they shouldnt have any qualms about their kids driving used cars (they arent the death traps that were the 80's and 90's cars we drove) as safety standards in the 2000's were pretty damn decent. Looking forward another 10 years when RS members kids are of driving age (another 10 for most of you guys) and then a 10-15 year old car would be the 2010-2015s. The choices are even slimmer than for an enthusiast car. You basically got some WRX's, frs/brz, and a myriad of bland 4 bangers w/ lame little turbos. At that time an e36 would be unthinkable as it'll already be like 30+ years old, an e30 would be a museum piece along with 996's.
Too bad i dont think they have any interest what so ever in our dying hobby. These cars meats are gonna be regulated to old + bald men soon with erectile disfunction and enlarged prostates.

I knew a guy in HS who went through 3-4 early 80’s Civic HBs and paid like $500 each. He swore by them and everyone thought he was cool af.

accord probably has some rodent damage.
common for that era of honda to get wiring harness damage from mice / squirrels chewing on it causing shorts. I think it was the harness insulation was biodegradable stuff that was quite delicious for their standards.

Basically, the BMW E46, BMW E82, and BMW E9X are the last enthusiast platforms that are attainable for young car enthusiasts these days. Maybe squeeze in a MK5/MK6 GTI into that conversation as they have proven to be quite reliable (interiors have held up and drivetrains are serviceable), aside from carbon buildup and the typical leaking water pump and coil pack annoyances.
The average RSX, WRX, and Civic Si from the mid-2000s these days is clapped out.
You could get a lot of car for $5K about 10-15 years ago. Now, you need to spend about 15K to get something decent. I can totally see why young people have bowed out of the hobby. As others have said, having a car before the era of the smart phone gave you status. Today, it's far more cost-effective to get a good mobile device, a perm, some nice clothes, some good A/V equipment, and become an social media influencer/YouTuber/x to get clout.

There's also 10+ things that are more fun to do nowadays than spending $10-15K on a dinky used car that has high gas and maintenance costs.

Huh. I started this reply in an effort to dispute this. But after doing the math, you're right LOL. I'll keep my thought process above.
This results in a lease/finance budget of a newer vehicle of $388/mo - $555/mo (depends on if you incl. 6K as a DP or not). The only real difference is that after 3 years, I only lost $2K, whereas if you lease/finance it would be a lot more.
Either way tho, an extra $400-$500 a month, assuming that you don't need a vehicle to commute for work/school, goes a long way. Gen Z is also the most financially literate / conscious generation. They're more likely to invest those funds, instead of spending it on things that they don't need. Likely due to growing up with (early) Millennial parents who also got fucked by the generation before.

So things I think they'd rather spend $5-10K+/year on
1. Travel Internationally / Solo 1-2x a year
2. Drugs + Partying + Raves + Clerbs
3. Skii / Snowboard
4. Big group trips to close destination to drink / do cheap activities in the house / shrooms
5. Eat out or activities and post online for clout / views / reviews
6. Golf, HUGE golf boom atm, never seen so many people in their 20's play
7. Crochet, knitting, arts, pottery, anything creative
8. Spending it on $100-300 clothes, thrifting
9. Joining a team in rec league 1-5 days per week or drop-in
10. Learning to cook and hosting friends
11. Board games + Warhammer 40k + gaming
The activities above would give you more experiences, life long memories, improve health, and create opportunities to make new friends. If they need a car, their parents likely has one they can bum off of to drive. But they also seem to not mind taking transit or ubers.

Cars are responsible for all my friends and life experiences now... it can happen by that means still. Like literally all my best friends are from the car club we had in SFU or people I came together with because of cars. You end up travelling or going to stuff because of cars, etc. Can do both.
I mean, in the end what it really is... you get out of something what you put into it. You can put effort into any interest or activity and get back from it however much you are willing to put in.

Thus less people get into it and make it less desirable to join the community. Most of the young people I know that are into cars usually get into via anime / games. They can't afford the fun car. I've gave countless amount of rides to people that were into S2000's but never had their own cars. Quote:

That particular Accord dead battery current draw issue is easy enough to diagnose. Probably faulty bluetooth module, or stuck ac compressor relay. Worst case a bad fusebox, or water leak into fusebox. Best case it's a bad connection at the battery.

If I had something like this in highschool as a young kid, I think I'd be pretty stoked. Sub 10k fun cars are still out there? Assuming it checks out of course:
