Well... Gen X and Millennials are the driving force behind the Rad era wave, so not sure why you gotta be a boomer to want an E30... boomers are too busy beating off to Caprice or Country Squire faux wood panel wagons

I don't think e30s were ever that popular or available here? Like even 10 15 years ago you rarely rarely see any old BMWs, I see more e34 than e30s, all I see are e36,e46. Even all the 190e 300e are quite rare now.

E30 wagons weren't here, that's what makes them so cool.
That said, I remember E30 and 190E era Mercs were ALL OVER the place in my younger years... and I'm right on the border between Gen X / Millennial

E30s were very popular. 15 years ago they were a big tuner car. Then they all disappeared like 240sx’, EF/EG civics, Miatas and the like.
E30 is a bloody old car now. I think back when I was a kid. They are basicly a 54’ Belair, to the new generation. Lol.

I loved my e30, but it was automatic so in sold for so cheap at the time because I wanted a manual and didn't want put the money into getting it swapped at a shop but still have an old BMW with all the old BMW issues to deal with.
I don't regret selling it especially with my E82 feeling like the spiritual descendant of the E30. But it was a relatively clean shell with an interior in amazing shape, it would've still taken a good amount of investment to get it in good enough shape to sell for any sort of good return or to keep it running over the years.

There were a lot of E30s on the streets back in the 90s and early 2000s.
I had one when they literally hit the bottom of the depreciation curve. I had a 1989 325is in 2010 that I bought for $1500. As more and more E30s became acquired like dumb young people, like me when I bought my example, they became drift cars or they were written off. The demand is still high for these cars because of the internet hype (though the hype is largely substantiated as it's truly a classic chassis and embodies everything that made BMW great).
These days, I imagine that most clean examples have been acquired by Gen-Xers or older Millennials who are wealthy enough to keep them in their 4-car garages in their vacation homes on the Island or on the Sunshine Coast. Everything else out there is clapped out with welded diffs, rocker panel rust, stripped interiors, etc.
$25K-40K for a clean late-model E30 example becomes a tough value proposition, when there are much more modern cars with slightly more complexity and less road feel that can be had at the same price point.

Ouch. That's some huge depreciation. These cars, brand new, are not cheap by any means!
We shopped around for a wagon and did a back to back comparison between the C and E-class wagons. Dollar for dollar, the E-class (brand new) is a tough pill to swallow. Is it nicer than the C-class wagon? Yes, but not by huge margins.
Also, I think roastpuff will agree with me. The new wagons materials, fit, and finish are pretty blah in comparison to their Audi rivals. Regardless, still nice cars. And I'm too broke to afford one.

Ah ... so C-class might be best option for value/buck. Less power but still enough, smaller though. C-class ... good name for all the Asian ladies in Richmond.

The C43s hovered around this price during COVID but I suppose those have dropped in value as well.
The Audi interiors are nicer, but the powertrains in these Mercs are more interesting than their Audi counterparts. They're all nice options in the end like you said - just a matter of preference.

not that it'd be cheap... | It's a mod some v8 owners do. You could also just wrap it in carbon fiber vinyl.

Also, the I6 drivetrain and the heated armrests are very tempting. Quote:

The powertrain in the E53 is definitely heaps more interesting than the EA888 or the 3.0T in the A6 Allroad.
