I need the D(iesel)
That's expensive. IIRC the diesel really didn't return much better fuel economy, and the turbo is the better buy.

The stick is also FWD only, you can't get AWD which makes it a bit of a lame duck.
I thought there was no diesels Mazda here and it was a Europe only thing
I think it was only available for 1 year before Mazda gave up on it - they had to cripple the performance a bit for emissions reasons and therefore the performance was worse than the turbo yet it $5k more.
sounds like it would be an absolutely insane 1 year only vehicle to purchase
no disrespect the the poster, on the surface it's pretty cool - but this must be one of the all time bad buys of the thread
mazda must have been out of their minds. passenger vehicle diesel is dead
Mazda's drivetrain strategy over the past 10-15 years has been largely that of a mad scientist who likes to zig when everyone zags.
While everyone else goes with a gas 3L turbo six that make anywhere from 300-550hp they go with a 3.3L gas single turbo that makes only 340hp and a 3.3L diesel turbo AND they plan on releasing a NA 3.3L gas engine. All hooked up to a in house designed 8 speed auto with a wet clutch. And then there's the PHEV drivetrain hooked to a 2.5L four.
There's no reason for them to not just go with the flow (3L turbo) and then use the ZF8 HP tranny that everyone else uses.
Just the amount of R&D dollars (for a tiny company) that went into something that should have been straightforward is crazy. I hope and pray that they can survive cause I don't ever want the Miata to go away but I'd never buy shares in them cause they are a poorly run business.
Yah, if I'd go diesel used, I'd go with the trusted diesel cheaters - VW/Audi, they've been at it for a long time. Do they have a Q5 TDI?
And maybe even BMW as a gamble. This is the 328d (weak 180hp) version but I think there is a 335d 6 cyl (265hp) engine version.
Really really good highway fuel economy
Diesel gets more efficient with high load
For most diesels yes, not for the Mazda

The E90 came in a 335d which is apparently a hoot.
The F30 only came in the 328d.
People that buy diesels typically know what they are doing and almost all of them have high mileage. No one buys a diesel to do 5k a year, except MAYBE the occasional X5 35d.
I was looking at diesel ML, and my mechanic told me to stay away
Most diesels worth their damn are going to have higher maintenance costs. They have much more oil capacity compared to their gas counterparts, and then some models you'll have the blueurea or DPF stuff to deal with. You really need to be piling on the highway mileage to make it work in your favour.

so the 335d only came in sedan here in NA and maybe the X5 SUV version? Saw a couple of Euro reviews of the BMW 335d wagon xdrive which apparently was the cat's meow!

yes - the X5's have the same M57 6 cyl diesel as the 335d
the build recipes for these motors are tried and true. do the deletes, get the tunes, maybe beef up the trans programming and cooling.
tuned 335d's will absolutely walk stock E9x M3's. Look for an msport and you've got an absolute bahnstormer on your hands.

There's also the G20 (2018) 540d that I mentioned earlier. It's the true successor to the M57 - the B57. 3L twinturbo straight six. Technically the successor is the N57, but it's only avail in the F10/F15 35d's in Canada.
The 2L diesel N57 (?) in the 28d's suck balls. Might as well get a normal car at that point.

I've been hunting for a 335d msport for the longest time. I almost pulled the trigger on the M3 drivetrain swapped one a few years ago, but ultimately bought the Type R instead. I've got trollface's problem - i refuse to pay the "market" price on these 300K KM 335d MSports...
I'll continue hunting for a 540d MSport instead.
