For a city car, it's probably the far better car

For North American family car where road trip is expected, the EV9 is probably better

not sure where to post this question, so ill do it here since astulzerRZD and evofire is posting alot.

how are these on the current bmw? is it pretty gimmicky or does or does it work pretty well in real life situation?

Traffic Jam Assistant
Driving Assistant Professional
Parking Assistance Plus w/Surround View
BMW Drive Recorder (does it have parking mode?)
Wireless Apple Carplay (i heard it disconnects alot)

EvoFire 09-27-2024 11:16 PM

What's Traffic Jam Assistant? I probably have it but never used it.

I have Driving Assistant Pro. I used it on the S2S when I went camping at Squamish. It works, sort of. If lines are well defined it will do ok. It'll change lanes for you if you signal. It'll follow the car in front of you up to your designated speed and you can set follow distance. I can see it working well on a arrow straight highway like I5. It was not great on the turns of S2S. It'll navigate the turns but poorly as it's a reactive system it doesn't know to take a "proper line" like a human driver would. Not that your average clai knows what a line is.....

Parking Assistance Plus / Surround View. I have it and used it once. I can set mirrors and park, I'm just gonna park myself, it's faster lol.

BMW Drive Recorder. I have it. I haven't had to use it. It records consistently and will save it if the car detects an impact. Or something like that. I have a Thinkware from our X3 that I installed anyways so it's not something I think too much about.

Wireless Apple Carplay. Don't use it, Android family. Android Auto works if you don't use a VPN. It goes through a server and through wifi on the car.

So today something happened that really really really turned me off from all future BMWs. BMW Connected Drive had a HUGE outage today. All of BMW's cars starting from ID7 uses cloud services and driver profiles via BMW Connected Drive. Since Connected Drive was completely dead, nothing worked on cloud. Here's the fucking kicker, I had a X1 loaner with iDrive 8 because the X5 was getting a window regulator replaced under warranty. The X1's BT was disabled, and will not turn on. This was because the car could not talk to BMW Connected Drive and bits and pieces of it's systems were disabled.
When I got back into the X5, which has ID7, it didn't have that problem since ID7 isn't as dependent on BMW CD yet. I was missing the real time traffic updates on my maps but that's minor since that expects real time data.
A friend sent me a picture that his Assisted Drive Plus was disabled because his car could not talk to BMW CD. Keep in mind Assisted Driving isn't a subscribed service, and plain old basic BT isn't either, and that's completely unacceptable to me.

I would say, avoid anything that is ID8 and above, which effective means it bars any new BMW on sale today. I would like my car to work because it's working, and not because some stupid cloud services APIs were not available and therefore I could not use my BT. I can go on but this post and rant would get way toooooo long.

Imagine this - it’s an ass snow day on lions gate or 91 is jammed up again. You bought a burger and the traffic’s crawling at 30kmh. Long day at work and you just wish your were home already or could turn your brain off.

I would not buy another auto trans car without traffic jam assist.

There's 50 flavors of this shit since they keep releasing new versions that are slightly different:

S Tier Driving Assistants - this is the kinda stuff you can give your parents
- MB Drive Pilot (hands AND eyes off, car takes liability - the only level 3 system)
- GM SuperCruise / BMW Enhanced Highway Assist (hands off, HD maps, and can lane change)

A Tier Driving Assistants
- Ford BlueCruise (also hands off, has maps)
- Tesla Autopilot (not FSD)

B Tier Driving Assistants
- BMW Extended Traffic Jam Assist: Hands off under 40 mph. Heard it’s a lil finicky.
- Porsche Innodrive

^ all of the above will know turns are coming up and slow down because it has HD maps. Steering is also way better since it’s not going in blind.

C Tier Driving Assist
- BMW / Audi / Volvo / Nissan Traffic Jam Assist - Must hold wheel, auto steer / adaptive cruise under 40mph

F Tier Driving Assist
- Tesla FSD - it's SOOO good sometimes that you almost believe it but its operational domain is so wide open that it is unsafe. Do not use this on curvy roads & or on any city street.

AstulzerRZD 09-27-2024 11:47 PM

Parking Assists - low key they either work or they don't

Imagine this - it’s a rainy ass day and you’re around the block 10X tryna park for Bun Cha Ca Hoang Yen or your girlfriend’s on your case for a yaletown dinner. Can’t see shit in your mirrors and windows covered by rain.

How big is that spot? Does my car fit? Am I at the right angle?
Good thing someone built something for this:

S Tier: MB
- In certain parking lots, u drop off the car and it automatically parks itself (Intelligent Park Pilot)
- In other lots, you can get out of the car and it parks itself
- For parallel, scans BOTH sides of the street for spots, never curbs the wheel
- Backup / 360 camera show where the car is, where the car will move, and where the tires/wheels are.

A Tier: BMW auto park / surround view 360 cam
- Parallel parking works but is kinda slow, will pull forward to reposition the car into a back in space
- Can record a set "path" (i.e. from the garage entrance to your parking space)
- 360 Camera lines and such are pretty good, doesn't show tire/wheel vs. car body like MB.

B Tier:
Ford/GM - parallel parking, trailer backup, and 360 cameras are very good.

F Tier:
Tesla FSD autopark (takes wild ass guesses at distances, camera based, no 360 camera).
Toyota/Lexus IPA (360 cameras don't even line up and low resolution, auto park slow)
VW Audi (Have had to take over several times, doesn't park the car right)

ya, all the assist stuff i dont really care for but the traffic jam assist looks like something i can get onboard with. im getting older and grumpier in traffic.

watching the parking assist video was painful. will probably use it once as a party trick but yes, much faster to DIY.

man! all bmw have window regulator problems. my e90 and f80 both needed the driver one replaced and now my e46 passenger rear needs one. luckily its stuck closed and i can live with never fixing it haha
do you use your digital key at all? im guessing if you were using a digital key you wouldve been fucked.

Yeah not really a Vancouver thing to do 5-8 hour road trips.
Those highway assists leave me a lot more relaxed and free to chat with friends while being safe.

Parking assistance depends - if it’s a tight spot and it’s dark/rainy outside, yes.
Otherwise no

This is the first time, but the X5 has the most mileage out of all my BMW products.

Had the Mini for 36k
X3 was 46k when we traded
M3 has 38k right now
The X5 is at 49k.

Astulzerd made me hate all cars now. I no longer enjoy cars. The future is bleak and I wanna die

Somebody get me a jet ski so I can take a depressing photo on it and then drown myself in woe.

AstulzerRZD 09-28-2024 08:31 AM

Sometimes car enthusiast culture becomes better when it becomes a little more difficult

Cleanest ZHP, E36 and 46 M3s I seen in my life were in New York
Tons of 911 with roof box, vintage Defenders, RS6 in the neighbourhood

It’s that weird catch 22 of being able to own cool shit, but not being forced to drive

AstulzerRZD 09-28-2024 08:33 AM

That said I’m a basic bitch when I’m driving other people, give me that S class so we can banter, watch a movie/take a tiktok with the onboard selfie camera while we’re stuck in traffic

Qmx323 09-28-2024 08:54 AM

Clean 2015 SQ5 for Civic money.

Looks like a Spektrum 2019 Golf R with 134K kms, @ local Capilano Audi dealer, has carfax, $29.9K debatable whether it's a good price. I'd say it is fair ask and depending on your negotiating skills, how much you can whittle that down.

Somebody never let go of the Burnt Orange craze from 20 years ago.

JDMDreams 09-29-2024 05:07 AM

That's pretty high mileage for the year, definitely not worth $30

Did you guys know that Bruno Sacco died ? What an automotive icon.

He designed the only mercs that I ever found attractive. Modern mercs are such garbage in comparison.

Somebody find me a good 1990 600SEL with a v12 in it.

Sounds like the automotive equivalent of mg42. Hitler buzz saw.
