yeah thats what they've done online. The MC Shift (same as the f1 in the ferrari) is the easiest to do the swap and you get the added benefit of dry sump + better weight distribution.
Does that matter in the long run? no, not really since i would argue the experience is in the great handling and the noise, but you can do the manual swap for around 10k and then you got a manual Ferrari v8 ala the last f430 for about 40-50k all in and done (including a 40k decent condition GT).
Upkeep and parts is another issue though. even 3rd party mechanics might be expensive due to the parts. For example, the OEM coolant hose for example could run you ~800 bucks depending on which part of the hose is cracked. This said hose was also redesigned in 2013 and is a lot more robust in the later years. Anyways just get a 2013+ one for added security.

Its more by engine serial number, not so much the displacement. The later ones were addressed. the earlier ones had issues regardless. The 4.2 was available as the base engine till 2011. If you got the GT-S that was the 4.7 or the MC which was also 4.7.
"According to the Maserati technical bulletin *any* engine (4.2 or 4.7) with an engine number of <148697 is potentially susceptible to variator issues"

God i miss mine so much.... i shouldnt have sold it. Objectively the ratrolla is better in everything except the noise, but it just doesnt have the soul of the maserati. Plus it cant seem to pull chinar skanks out of the woodworks like this beauty did when i got her in 2010. Too bad you guys didnt get a chance to drive it before i sold it, otherwise i would have likely converted more than a few of you to buy this insane machine. Mines most likely the best sorted one of its model year, given how much i spent on it and how little KM (45,000km ish) when i sold it.
