only way i can see it making sense is if my car will depreciate more in the next 5 years then the e46. Which is very possible. But again Im going from 11,000k to 160,000k and no warranty. Really tough.

I'd sell my 4 year old car any day of the week for a 14 year old car if it was a VW too

car with 160k km would require some work here and there.

but the joys of owner ship of an old car: its at the bottom of depreciation. you're basically paying for maintenance and running cost (well of course its a bit higher since its older and an M car to boot)

per say you bought the car for 20k. rack up 40k kms over 5 years. you spend 6k on running costs (brakes, servicing, tires, bushings, lower control arms.. etc) and end up selling it for 18k when you're done with it... you're losing $1600 on depreciation per year with maintenance included which is not bad at all. $133 a month basically.

^ some of those maintenance costs come up with a newer car over 5 years as well.

all said and done, you'd lose less on older cars, if you do count dollar to dollar and sell it in reasonable shape at an okay price if you're done with it. (maybe even make some money too.. *cough* e30 M3s... and 911 )

Even ignoring resale you come out ahead overall, including everything but oil changes and gas if I sold my Cherokee for scrap tomorrow it would've cost me $172/month (if I skip the brand new tires $145), which would only get me a base-model, manual Nissan Micra (the cheapest new car you can buy, and I doubt it would do well offroad). Girlfriends Prelude, including the trans swap, $200/month or a Micra SV base (auto). My Celica GTS is nothing amazing but $100/month couldn't buy me shit.

Just because getting the m3 was a great decision, doesn't mean it can't be topped.

NEVER EVER BUY ANY OF THE FIESTA'S WITH AN AUTO. Speaking from experience, EVERY SINGLE ONE of those turds have had a weird slippage and rough first/second gears that will give you a massive headache. The problems lay within the double clutch auto design so whether it has 100k kms or 100kms they slip the same

I looked at his car a couple years ago, when i was looking to purchase an Acura TL Type S, and it had 80,000kms then already. I remember vividly because I was ready to pull the trigger, and he decided not to sell it at the very last minute (right after I had sold my car)

That was kind of the vibe I got doing my research, and it sounds like a lot of Ford dealers are being real pricks when it comes to trying to get it properly fixed. That and it sounds like you have to really watch how you drive to get the automatically controlled manual box to get even close to the right gear, which I refuse to do.

The new Focus also has the same problem that the Fiesta has, both are actually not bad cars with the manual transmission but stay far away from the DCT. There will be a lot of them flooding the market soon with lots of people trading them in and getting rid of them before they are out of warranty.

Don't get the pre-2014 Fiesta, especially the 2011.

2011 models don't have an option to turn off TC.
It doesn't have a driver's armrest.
There's more standard features on the 2013 models (but why bother going for a 2013 when you can get a refreshed 2014).
(there's a few more differences but I can't recall off the top of my head)
Also the auto tranny (pre-facelift) is dicey.

Ford's actually pretty good about taking care of their customers.
They recently extended the warranty to cover the transmission clutch and seals to 7yr/160,000km. Which covers replacing the clutch with new revised clutches, input shaft seals, and software flash.

I have a '11 and never had any real issues with it until recently when I took it in for a re-flash and it started developing a shudder from shifts 1 to 2. Took it in to the dealership and had the tsb done on the car, drives very smooth now, like how it was before the shudder occurred.
