200k is nothing. The thing is about BMWs, is if it made it there in the first place, it was well maintained. Theres no way it wouldn't have shit itself by now if someone wasn't taking care of it. If you can turn a wrench for nothing more than doing some cooling system stuff and replacing suspension bushings somewhere in the next few 10s of thousands of KMs it could go 200K more.

Super cheap, super easy fix. Obviously too far out for most of you, but hey... for the price, it's worth the drive.

those wagons have a lot electric problems though. no matter how well maintained, there's a high chance that some components will fail after 100K.
we had an 06 at work that kept coming back with different issues. hated that car. :fuckthatshit:

Besides the mechanical sides of things (Provincial inspection required), getting it registered in Canada could be a hassle. If I were buying, i'd definitely go down to a broker with the current owner and make sure all the papers are in order, despite it being legally brought into Canada.

If you just want to fly down the freeway, you buy this. Great price assuming the air suspension is in good shape.

Minty 1990 Merc 300TE diesel.

This would not be so cheap if it was a diesel, I think you read it wrong. Just a wagon.

I had one of these wagons; one of my favourite cars, despite several issues like hidden rust and broken 4matic. They are starting to get very expensive to fix, but IMO are one of the most timeless looking estates out there. So comfy to drive and you feel the quality and superb engineering. The M104 engine is one of the best Mercedes ever made, but the issues lie with everything else with the car; self-leveling rear suspension, wheel sensors, brake parts, driveshaft wear etc

I think this is a good deal, nice that the owner is up front about the issues. I would get them checked out. I almost bought a second one, had it inspected, and the mechanic told me to run away as fast as I could.

300TE's go for cheap, but the 300TD's go for up to 5x as much.

The 300D listed below is a great deal, I would check it out if I was in the market.

fliptuner 06-08-2014 09:48 PM

I thought that Estate isn't 4matic?

That ad's been up for a couple of months now. Started at $3800iirc.

That's actually a respectable price. If it's in as good shape irl as it is in the pics, I think it's totally worth it. Mileage is also below average, especially for a diesel.

Estate is the euro term for wagon. They made the 300TE, 300TE 4matic, and 300TD.

The 4matic on almost all versions of these cars don't work, as they were a shitty, early version of 4matic. To fix it you either find a used 4matic transfer case (good luck, will fail anyway), or ship your transfer case to Ontario somewhere where they will charge you twice the value of your car to fix it, plus install costs. Hence why you don't see many.

The 300TE non 4matic is the way to go, but the TD is the one you want, as it's decent on fuel and takes diesel; the 300TE is huge and heavy, and is a pig on high octane gas. There's a reason it's still for sale ;)

Even more rare is the 300TD 5 speed manual, which they only sold in Europe. When I was shopping for mine there was one on CL, imported from Germany; asking price $15000. :heckno:

Someday I'd love to have one in my stable...

fliptuner 06-08-2014 10:40 PM

Oh I meant that one in particular (in the ad) isn't 4matic, therefore less of a problem.

And yes, I agree TD 5spd is the way to go. There were a couple of German imports for sale recently but I've been tripping out on S124's since I saw this pic:

Aye. I dun' goofed....

Either way i'm constantly on the hunt for older minty Merc Diesels but i'm always afraid to pull the gun because i've never had/maintained a diesel before. Mind you they look relatively simple to work on compared to the modern ones.

SpartanAir 06-08-2014 10:53 PM

Bit of a hijack here, but if you want to get pumped on the 300TE, these videos are awesome and entertaining! The build quality is just insane...
