I don't necessarily agree with the "500k this decade" valuation, but this is an investment item for sure. | The $500k figure really is silly. Chevy built 216 L88 Corvettes from 1967 to 69, including 116 in 1968 and 80 in 1969. The 20 built in 1967 are selling for around $1,000,000, while the 196 built in 1968-69 years are selling for $400-500k today. Chevy built 3754 L71 Corvettes in 1967 alone....

This isn't a good deal; in fact, it's way overpriced and effectively useless for anything other than racing around Ft. Mac. It's a legit sleeper, though, so I've got to post this ridiculous thing... it has a 572 ci (9.4L) engine. 2001Chevy 4x4 Custom 750hp |

so i posted up the porsche a few pages back, and I offered to do a straight trade for my 01 E46 M3 Vert, 6 Speed. He is taking me up on that offer, but I'm scared to pull the trigger.
Would I be getting a decent trade? http://vancouver.craigslist.ca/rch/cto/4975990508.html

If his car is as good as it seems, I think you are coming out ahead on that trade.

depends on why he's selling and why you're selling.
if its just the badge you want, that car might not do the trick for you in terms of performance.

If I do decide to go ahead with the trade, I will definitely get it checked out.
From what I gather, if the IMS is upgraded, it's not exactly bulletproof right? Is there still a chance for it to fail?

Its much less likely but still possible. From what I've heard, the IMS failure is MUCH more common on low milage cars that sit for extended periods of time. The best preventative maintenance for the issue is driving the car. I can really get behind that kind of maintenance. Granted I'm a porsche fanboi, but I'm also an M3 fanboi, and I think this is a pretty great trade for you. If the m3 was a coupe it may be a little less tempting, but its not that hard to find another e46 m3 vert if you regret your decision.

I will probably go check it out in person and go from there. Is there anything else that I should be looking out for?
Is all the preventative maintenance done on this particular car?

if he's done everything he says he's done, then yes - all preventative stuff (within reason) is done. They eat starters pretty quick, but it isn't' a big deal. Go for a long highway run and listen for howling from the trans - mine's getting pulled tomorrow for a refresh at exactly the same mileage as this car.
Replacement IMS bearings can fail, especially if the engine had a failure before. There is a procedure to determine whether a failed engine should have the replacement bearing done, but nothing is stopping someone from putting a new one in anyway. I'd want to know how many miles have been put on it since the work was performed. I don't know what warranty he's talking about - if a shop isn't on LN's authorized list, they don't extend a warranty on the bearing. Far as I know, Juan's is the only local "preferred" shop that does. I sincerely doubt MB is going to pony up for a new motor if it fails.
Get him to send you a picture of the option sticker on the bottom of the "frunk" They're easy to decode and it would be nice to see if this car had factory sport suspension (they would be OK with lowering springs if they're still good) and if it has a sport dif.
I think I'd want to know a little bit more about the tuning that's been done.
SCAN will give you a really good inspection for $200 - even if it won't tell you the condition of the bearing - you'll at least be able to spot if the guy is BS ing about the quality of the work.

This almost sounds like the one that was listed on here for $8500 a month or so ago. edit: that was a '98 IIRC. Sounds like a good deal but I'd want the factory red interior. Not to rock it, but just to have it. Buying factory Recaros is easy. Finding factory red fronts is pricey. Curious how long this lasts. Wifey needs a track car ninja edit Email sent. Here we go! I'm not tuned into used IS-F pricing, but you'll be getting a lot of car for 30k. They are awesome.

I wouldn't say it's slower than m3 or c63, traps a good 110+ in the quarter. I like the fact that it was stealthy and lexus reliable. 30K is a good price.
