There's lots of reasons people don't want a well kept relatively rare car that they own not to be written off. It's not inconprehendible.

I'm guessing when the bumper beam got pulled into that position it didn't come off the frame cleanly. Then you've got the hood, fender, bumper skin, grille, lights, damaged wiring for the lights, likely frame damage, possible suspension damage from the weight, etc etc.
