Serious question for those of you with s2ks. If you were car shopping tomorrow and were without s2k, would you still be considering one at these prices? To be honest as retarded as the prices have gotten in comparison to before, they still are in the realm of being reasonable for what you get IF its a prime example of one.

Probably not knowing the bottom prices they hit, but it's still cheaper than the 50k when they were new.
Prices seem to be soaring with a select group of ap1s, we'll see if they sell. Until then it's just another cl ad sitting there.

old ad, so i'm guessing it's the price and is not as popular as i thought it would be
has US and east coast history but seems to be a strong survivor considering its age.

Some modified goodies (good buys if you factor in the cost of parts/labor, and were looking to do similar mods to your own vehicle): 2013 Volkswagen Golf R, Candy White, Fully Built Engine and Turbo
Looks like a lot of car for the money. Sure, you could buy a new MK7 R for $45k+tax, which gives you more incentive to haggle down this seller. A built motor is still money, though. 2011 Infinti G37XS Coupe Stillen Supercharger 515hp
I believe this vehicle was sold for around the same price last year.

So it would be biased for sure because we're not willing to pay this new premium.

I've owned 2, an AP1 I got with 113k local clean title it was nice just need a little loving cosmetically, I only paid 10k for that one.. that was 4 years ago.
My recent one, well let's just say I bought it because it was affordable with low KM and prrtty clean all around.. the title didn't scare me because the car was strait forward. Plus I never buy a car without buying out straight so it was right in my budget. Id never throw more than 18k for another s2k but that's because, like what was mentioned above, I got both for "cheap"

NSX/s2000 tax more palatable than ITR tax since you can argue you're getting more of a car
actually scratch that...I thought ap1 for 20k two years ago were stupid...25k+ is something else. unmolested local car sure it might work...modified us import no thanks.

^ Personally I find US import making no difference on S2000.
Only way to even tell is the following:
- RIV sticker in door jam
- e brake logo
- 07+ outside temperature in Fahrenheit
If the car checks out prior to purchase, US car makes no difference

The value of goods in Canada are essentially directly linked to the exchange, even though our pay doesn't alter due to it.

Looking at all these S2K ads calling their cars mint is interesting. Is it wrong to expect mint to have no modifications?

Prices are crazy I suppose but it makes it worse when our dollar is weak and the US is strong. Say you spend $25K CAD on a vehicle. Well technically that less than $20K USD. In a few years(or several) say the vehicle appreciates but our dollar strengthens, now it's worth $23K USD but that's only $25K CAD due to exchange increase in our favor. No gain really.
Whether we admit it or not, we are all looking at the US dollar factor now both as buyers and sellers. The direct comparison is buying one from the US but with the shit exchange it ends up costing large nowadays. We are buying toys with shit money right now and it sucks.

I would agree with you that mint condition has to be stock, or very minimal modifications that can easily be reversed. The only one that might be worth it is the AP2 with the hardtop, that thing alone is worth $4k given that its minty

I thought of getting another S2K (I didn't like the colour I originally had) but couldn't justify paying out the roof + tax for essentially the same car. Too much of a hassle to stay on top of craigslist ads, refreshing every hour or two just to be disappointed by the "pristine condition / mint" S2K that is actually a POS in person.... That and it's a pain in the ass to deal with S2K sellers...
Ended up getting a decent deal on a 08 4dr civic si.

Owned an AP1 for a number of years and sold it last year. Definitely miss the car, but would not want to consider one at these prices today. But part of that rationale is because I want to try a number of different cars in my lifetime.
I think your point about them being in the "realm of ... reasonable" is also what's keeping the asking prices high, along with the exchange rate (and supply and upcoming spring). A 997 GT3 RS is pricey pricey, while an S2000 at $20k+ is also still pricey, but is easier for more people to justify, when you look at the absolute dollar figures.
When I was in the process of selling my S2K, my wife told me not to do it. Her rationale was because I loved the car and she said that I'd regret it. Turns out she was right. |
