It really isn't that expensive to reinforce. Plus this issue is least common on the convertibles than the coupes. Just inspect it well and you can probably knock off a few dollars if they haven't been done.
Ballin!
Coupes, cabs, sedans, M, non-M, 10/10 will tear. Only wagons are safe. If you do the subframe, do the subframe bushings too. Subframe is dropped so you'd be an idiot for not doing the subframe bushings. Also do the trailing arm bushings because it's all out.
Get aluminum bushings, there's a reason why subframes kept tearing from E36 to E46. E90 stopped tearing, why? Aluminum subframe bushing.
If it's a hack job reinforcement cutting corners, it's cheap. If you do it properly, it really adds up.
Also to mention, if it's a pre 2003.5 you'll need front strut top reinforcement plate and strut bar, rear strut top reinforcement plate. The strut tops tear too.

even with the different design, with high mileage and age, even wagons aren't safe.
If you're serious about it, obviously a car proof is in order to find out more about this accident, as well as a PPI. It could be something as simple as needing an alignment, or the tie rods/suspension parts/etc were bent from the accident.
Seeing as the timing belt was done not that long ago, did they replace the water pump as well? If not, did they at least inspect it and note that they did on the invoce? Good thing about these motors is that they're workhorses. It won't take much to get it back into shape. Fresh fluids, plugs, cap/rotor, fuel filter, etc, you're set. Plus those things are super easy to do yourself, should you want to.
Could be a good opportunity to grab this thing for much less than asking, given the small issues you mentioned.
Fluids looked fresh, the plugs and cap/rotor looked like they were recently replaced, fuel filter as well. No receipt/invoice available for the timing belt but apparently it was part of a $3000 service.
Everything looks good other than not driving straight so I'm going to pass but it's a good look for someone that intends on spending between $2500 - $3000 as a daily.
Good price for a GLi / GTI, but there are lots of things to check on these cars at this age and mileage, not to mention the used car dealership considerations.

is that rust in the corner of the trunk lid?

Owned by a friend of mine, super cool and humble guy. High mileage but it's a unicorn for those who are looking for one, seems like a decent price considering the rarity. For those willing to put in the work I guess for a top end rebuild.

It sounds like you could budget 8k for the absolute worst case scenario. It leaves you with an absolutely incredible car for like 15-16k. Worth it for someone who has some knowledge and doesn't mind rolling the dice. You could end up WAY on top.

The engine in that red car is not the same as the 2grfe (Evora/Camry engine). That's the old iron block 3.0L, and although I'm sure is a decent driver, it's much less power (~180hp?). If the body is in decent shape (aside from the front bumper paint) then it's reasonably priced.
not knowing how heavy the engine is, is there any noticable difference in how it handles because of weight distribution?

what are mazda millenias like in this vintage? looks nice in the pictures, but the driver's seat looks a bit lumpy/tired. claims a $2000 dent is the reason why icbc wrote it off and gave it rebuilt status...

iirc those things had EGR and common oil leak issues, a family member used to own one and it was headaches after headaches...could've been a 626, i always get the two mixed up.
looks like one of those belt-driven supercharged engines
