Been looking for a winter car lately, not a lot of AWD hatchbacks in North America… and I didn't totally hate my GF's old golf… hmmmmm anyone every own one of these? lol

who's going to risk $20k+ to buy a rebuilt for the sole purpose of making a few grand

lol at gloating at profiteering off PS3 launch...i'd feel bad ripping desperate parents off that want a shiny console under the christmas tree for their kids. It's one thing to profit a bit just so you can buy a PS3 for free....i bet that achievement looks pretty good your resume though!

I personally would not ruin it in an alberta winter.

If you want a beater dont ruin a car like that. buy an older 4runner or something

godwin 08-10-2014 02:07 PM

R32 got a lot of local VW enthusiasts' panties in a bunch in the early 00 when a local firm built one from parts sourced in Europe.

I agree with you I rather have the S4. No replacement with displacement... however the reliability is probably just as crappy as the VW brethren!

Not into the Audi Avant school bus, it's bigger than I need + they are soooo boring to drive.

I'm expecting to find one that was already wintered. Though my winter driving is minimal as both me and the spouse live/work/school DT.

VW and Audi reliability is shit on both ends. If you're ever driven an S4 it's a pretty sad experience, those are hardly "drivers cars", it's like driving the library.

The VW is much more comparable to an STI/EVO but obviously a bit slower, much more refined, and with OMG fold down seats!! I know the GR STI hatch has fold down seats but I've already owned one of those.. and it sucked. IMO GD STI > GR STI.

Edit: Ewww that S4 is an auto box.

The R32 is a good car, but its still a 10 year old VW. Whats the point in AWD if you aren't having fun with it in the snow anyways? Wash it, don't crash it and you will be fine. I feel safer driving through edmonton after freezing rain dropping down to -40 than I do driving in richmond when its +25 and mostly cloudy in the dead of summer.

I feel the opposite, I can't believe how bad Edmonton drivers are.. the mass migration of minorities who are obviously not familiar with driving has made this city so much worse. Not to sound racist… (This is where you say something racist and expect people not to be offended) but there is LOT of skinny black people here who drive like total shit, it's an Ethiopian invasion of the roads.

Living in Van, I maybe saw 2 car accidents in 5 years, in Edmonton I see at least 2-3 per week.

I wouldn't feel bad, people are stupid enough to pay it because they were too busy having more money than brains to preorder. They aren't being forced to buy it at that price so IMO they aren't being ripped off.

I meant for the condition of the car. Not the safety of the vehicle. Going to fill with rock chips and other people who cant drive on packed snow or ice.

But ok.

I understand that part of it too, but I daily drove my mint corrado in edmonton for 3 years, and as long as you were keeping up on the washes, and had a 3m clear bra on it, the winters really had no ill effects. It was driven to the mountains weekly. Only problem was I kept smashing $240 euro lips. It was in as good of condition the day before it was crashed as the day I got it. Before you say i told you so, it was written off in august.:(

TjAlmeida 08-10-2014 10:47 PM

I dont know man, Maybe it was because i was always on highways and lightly used roads but my truck got littered with rocky chips last winter lol.

Pretty much all that gen S-Classes came with the double pane glass. Even the S320.

godwin 08-10-2014 11:38 PM

If you are set on keeping the car after the swap yes.. Most US jurisdictions would not let you swap an engine that is older than the chassis without that market.. resell is hard.. of course unless you get an ICBC VIN.

Not to mention modern bullet proof glass require replacement after a few years due to UV breaks down the polycarbonate panels.
