not a stock color, why was it resprayed? If it hasn't been pranged in an accident and checked out OK in a PPI it'd be a great deal. The 1999's have a dual row IMS bearing, less failure prone than the later 996's. When I was hunting for a 996, all the less expensive examples I looked at were either multiple accident victims and/or needed at least $5K-$6K dumped into them immediately to address deferred maintenance. If this one was neither of those I'd overlook that hideous color (or at least find a used top in a better color). Quote:

If it was a coupe I'd be very excited about it, even with the ridiculous colour. Hopefully producer chimes in with his knowledge about the transmission issues in the 996. |
996 transmission is pretty solid unless the previous owner was a noob and didn't know how to operate manual transmission. Some odd quirks here and there, but nothing out of the ordinary compared to say a Honda or BMW. $2K less and coupe. I'd buy it and drive it and hopefully end up on the news where someone thought the trunk lid was a GT3 wing. The hardtop is a nice bonus at the very least. But what do I know? I drive a Corolla. |

Very interesting...technically it has everything that makes an M3 an M3, but is it really an M3 :lawl: seems legit though, good price for an E36 M3? 1997 BMW M3 with extras |
It's pretty reasonable if well put together. I'd PPI the fuck out of it for concern for the wiring. |
that thing has been for sale for a very long time now... |

Yes - IMS bearing on 99's is more stout - depending on the milage of that car, I'd prob let it ride until it needed a clutch. I've now owned and recently looked at 2 99's that have both suffered failed pinion bearings in the transmission. Easy to hear an audible howl from the box on decel especially. A PPI can show the problem if the mechanic opens the trans sump and feels around for the sludge that used to be in teh pinion bearing settled near the drain plug. 2k USD fix, but you have to ship the whole trans to GBOX in colorado for the repair. I did hear of somebody having it done locally - but I don't know the details. Most shops will not touch it. I sold my canadian 99 cab for 22k last spring with new clutch, new IMS, repaired transmission and lots of other nice goodies including hardtop. Hold out for a nicer example you don't need to drop $$$ on right away. re: M3 - I think I talked to that guy about buying his magma seats last year. Better try him again, I need a good parts seat even to clean up my bolsters. |
I'm a sucker for imola interiors. Both a little bit high milers, but PPI and maintenance records can solve that Sub 35k manual E92 2008 BMW m3 coupe 6spd Sub 20k manual E46 2003 BMW M3 |
looks like E46 market is slowly going downwards in price. people wanted 20k+ for cars over 200k kms at one point for a 6 MT!! |
I just wanted to chime in and say E46 > E36, if you're considering both... just go for E46, it's a much better car. Though I could understand if people prefer the looks of E36 over the E46. |
