S2K price is getting retarded. This is coming from a former owner who fully appreciates the car.

wingies 10-18-2016 06:07 PM

Its not retarded if theres a demand for it, best example is ITR

jing 10-18-2016 07:45 PM

Cars these days are just overpriced in general. Years ago there would be a ton of decent cars for under 3k but now it seems like the only thing that price range gets you is 90s Toyotas and 2003 Dodge Caravans. Everyone seems to think their car is made of gold.

I don't agree with this logic.

However I do think that social media has definitely saturated the market of sought after cars. People who own these cars are looking to cash in because well, people are willing to pay. So why not sell high?

I believe people always knew they had Gold. Pre-Initial D the AE86 was a "Good" car. People knew that. But Initial D added that JDM drift tax. I think Social Media has that same effect...

In 2007, rare JDM parts (on ebay, forums) for a few Honda's I was into were dirt cheap. Now, there are hundreds of Instagram / FB pages hoarding these parts and asking 4x as high as before. (Eg. Hmotorsonline) Same goes for cars.

This thread makes me happy because it is a collection of cars that are currently up that are fairly priced according to their market value (which in turn can spark discussion that justify's that price... S2000 and E36 M3 pricing has been discussed more than once on here) and fortunately enough people post cars on here that are very well priced below market value... (I look forward to these every night.)

I think a lot of people want a more oldschool raw driving experience and are happy to pay the premium for it.

Modern cars are not as fun to drive.

Look what happened to these old french hot hatches, most of witch ended up in hedges or perched in trees throughout the years:

jing 10-18-2016 08:54 PM

I'm not sure what kind of raw driving experience you've ever had with a 97 Camry to ever justify paying $2500 for one, let alone one with over 300k on it.

I'll admit to being a hypocrite of sorts. Basically every fun car I've ever owned I've made money on due to rising values ignited by fanboys and other enthusiasts. It will definitely be harder to re-enter the market in a few years after my finances have settled down with a bunch of big things happening in life lately. It's great that I have a minty E30 to enjoy right now but I don't expect to be able to keep it for long. Anyone want to buy it? :nyan:

My old high school principal still drives his first gen Renault 5/Le Car. I occassionally see him in traffic, pretty neat car.

Yeah, definitely compared to modern cars (especially hybrids/electrics ... bleh ... though I haven't driven a Tesla yet, so maybe Tesla is okay), the 10-year, 20-year, and older cars are definitely more interesting to drive. Today's cars feel more like appliances on wheels.
