My current DD gets 18 mpg or 13L / 100km. It also requires premium. In other words, greenies hate me. That E55 would be perfect for me if I had room for another saloon.
Also: The RX7 posted above has BC plates up front and Alberta plates out back

heard about RX7/8 MPG, but never knew anyone well enough to know actual real world MPG....

The RX7/8 isn't the greatest, but the oil consumption is what isn't good from what I've heard. My STI with stage 2+ tune wasn't exactly great either, better than the M3 but not good nonetheless

Then again, the car was made when gas was cheaper and emissions weren't as strict.
Fast forward to today and my car gets the same MPG as this car here: Technology sure has come far in 20 years

Somewhat affiliated, I know the previous owner and have been over the car as I was considering it last time it was for sale. A year ago I'd have said overpriced, but these are creeping upwards. It's been well taken care of, I know that.
99% sure IMS is not done. Also, as I've mentioned before, the next big 996 killer will be failing transmission pinions. I'd want the trans sump pulled and checked for bearing grease build up on any 996 inspection. | Saw the car today. Looking back on the photos, the guy he hired to post the ad photo-shopped a lot of paint chips and marks out of the car. All four wheels have been curbed slightly, and are peeling. To be fair the owner was quite clear about the paint issues on the phone...
I could hear the transmission while under load... I'm still trying to work out if that's a deal breaker or not... What does it cost to get some fresh transmission bearings in there?
Also, IMS hasn't been done according to records.

Also, IMS hasn't been done according to records. | It cost me 2200 USD to have my pinion bearing replaced along with some other stuff while they were in there - note this is not a trans rebuild, just a synchro etc.
It cost nearly a thousand more to ship it back and forth by the time the brokers were done with it.
Another note - the noise you're hearing could be something else entirely. If you have it inspected, make sure they pull the trans sump plug to look for the grease that may have some out of the bearing.
Every case is different, but by the time the trans was worked, the clutch was done, the IMS and RMS, water pump, mounts, plugs (you get it - all the stuff you would do) I spent 8k
I only paid 12k for my 996 so I came out OK - but if I was looking at a high mile 27k car - I'd be wondering what else I could get for 35k.

993 is a quirky and fun car but not fast and not worth 78k lol
Porsche maintenance hurts. $300 oil change at an independent shop (10.5 L, two oil filters). Oil leak? That reseal will be $5 - 8k.

The yellow car is a 2000 according to the ad.
Still if you look at the poll in the Rennlist 996 forum it's at 10.24% failure rate on ~800 responses. If the result of it failing wasn't engine destruction, I'd ignore it.
If I was looking at that car, I'd price the cost of doing the IMS into my budget and my offer for the car, his asking price is definitely on the high end for a mk1 with that many km. Do the IMS for peace of mind and I think that it is one of the very few maintenance items that actually increases the resale value of a car, given 2 equivalent cars to buy, pretty much anyone buying a 996 would choose the one with the IMS bearing done.
The reality is that if the IMS hasn't failed yet, it's probably not going to fail. They've found that the failure rate has dropped significantly there was a time when all the cars that were going to fail were failing. While I think one could probably buy that car and not worry about the IMS, for peace of mind and resale why not do it? Quote:

Speed Yellow 996 w/ aero kit... looks pretty sharp.
Deserves a half cage in the back, GT3 rear wing and a pair of GT3 buckets... will be a nice driver weekend street/ track car.

That already is the mk1 gt3 wing. Isn't it essentially identical looks wise? And my god, 996 gt3 buckets are one of the most desirable seats on earth.

I could hear the transmission while under load... I'm still trying to work out if that's a deal breaker or not... What does it cost to get some fresh transmission bearings in there?
Also, IMS hasn't been done according to records. | While I recognize that a factory aero kit car is rare and desirable, that is a silly price for a 200k early 996 C2. The early 996 is literally the least desirable and least collectable 911 ever built (which makes them great value IMO but that is still factual) which to me means I would not pay a big premium for a "unique" or "rare" model such as the aerokit since nobody is likely to ever care in a big way. The 2000s had the slightly improved interior materials but are to the best of my knowledge, every bit as likely as the 99 to have RMS/IMS issues.
Paint chips, a transmission issue, and 200k for $27k? No thank you.
Mark
