2001 BMW 330xi, manual, 227k, $4300

https://vancouver.craigslist.ca/nvn/cto/6099891856.html

$500 for a Toyota Matrix with almost 300k. Needs some minor work, possibly more at this price point.

Means you can offer $5750 and should seal the deal. Win win on both sides. Guy gets to put food on the table, you still have a helluva deal.

Or the dealer was quickest to buy it. I've seen a few cars listed in this thread now purchased fast by dealers and then put back on the market for much more. There are specialty dealers using computer programs that scour the net for deals. This is what dealers do and who we are competing with.

Then they charge a doc fee.

Also funny they didn't list it back on usedvictoria...

Basically, they've turned what we (the average person do as a hobby) into a job/way of living. Entrepreneurial. I'm OK with that ... as long as they are reasonable in terms of profit margin.

That's the key, the last 4 cars I've bought were because I called the day they listed it and was ready to buy that day. Meanwhile whenever I sell a car people want to waste my time with text messages for days then expect me to take my car in for a PPI 50km away during business hours.

They're called craigslist email alerts, I set them up for cars I'm interested in, anyone can do i. I also have the advantage of reading this thread which I doubt many dealers do

Why are you guys getting all pissy over a suppose 2.5k profit fora dealership? Dealership have massive overhead. They also have many cars that sits on the lot not selling and depreciating. Minus all of that and the commission for which ever sales finally sold the car they might not net as much as you guys think. They are also able to do deal immediately during business hours and either take chances with not doing PPI or have their own tech do the inspection.

Private sales is so much different than running an actually business. Us hobbyist spot a good deal once in a while, dealership has to do this day in and day out to stay in business. TBH I think it's completely fair markup

All true. Dealers also take the risk that something major is wrong with the car and their profits evaporate. I still remember around 1995 my dad bought a 91 Eagle Talon Tsi turbo and on the test drive it was blowing blue smoke. It was for sale at the local Nissan dealer in Victoria. They replaced the turbo prior to the sale which I am sure cut their profit margins.

I registered just to respond to this.

This car was listed for 2300 USD a month ago in Seattle. Owner before had it that low because it's a rustbucket. Current owner hasn't done anything except import it and get it BC regi.

It's the same guy who bought the 240sx listed for 2500 that didn't run and re-listed for 5800 without doing anything to it.
