Get it inspected, is an $8,900 car needing $2,500 in repairs a better deal than a $10,000 car needing nothing?

Just an example but yeah. Looking at a Craigslist add means jack shit.

For 9 grand, you can get something better than a base model, automatic, RSX.

...just sayin'

OK, I'm all ears...what can you suggest? First time buying a car in 8 years so I'm totally out of touch. My criteria is reliable, cargo space, good on gas, attractive and fun to drive. <$10K budget. RSX seems to have met all of that criteria.

Absolutely nothing wrong with RSX's - they're great, cheap cars to drive, with tons of room and good handling.

Since you posted both manual and an auto, I'm assuming you're indifferent to which transmission it has. For that price (or less), you should be able to get a Type S, manual, leather, plus some extras.

Initially I was thinking of leasing the 2014 mazda3 hatch because it looks/performs awesome but thought I'd try the 2nd hand market first.

Also...I was willing to consider the auto because of its low mileage. Amazing for an 8 year old car.

Keep in mind RSX insurance ain't cheap. If you end up finding one you like, maybe call and get a quote first. Might be a deal breaker for you when compared to something like a 3.

I owned a 2004 Mazda 3 GT and test drove a 2014 Mazda 3 GT before settling on my GTI. The new Mazda 3 is a little bit quicker but a Mazdaspeed 3 from the older gen would spank it. The only problem with buying one of the older 3's is that you're not getting a lot of modern equipment for your money and the new 2014 Mazda 3 is about as well equipped as they get for the price.

However, they do hold their value pretty well so a good one (and buy a 2.3L or 2.5L engine version...the entry level ones are sooooo slow) with decent mileage, in good condition with a clean title might not be cheap. I got $9k for my ten year old car with 80k on it so I honestly think you can find a better more interesting car for the price.

Also, a lot of 2004s were broken into due to a poor door lock design that opened the fucking door when you kicked it hard enough.

The second gen was probably much more reliable and better built but fucking stupid smiley face looking.

Same thing here. 171k on mine. Full bolt ons, Kpro, and a good set of tires. Only problem I had with mine was tail light gasket failure and a leaking passenger side motor mount. Both were super easy repairs.

I guess I got the other end of the stick. Replaced my stock clutch at 88k (now at 108k), tail light gasket, passenger door lock actuator, and lots of maintenance.

Oh well, no complaints though .

Clutch replacement also has a lot to do with the driver…. and the traffic you drive in. Just 2 other issues sounds like it was a pretty sound investment to me!
