Wow. $6k forba rebuilt status car that needs a motor rebuild. That CG Eurospec M3 is looking better and better each day.
The guy is over on BCbimmers. Its so hard for me to bite my tongue over there how genuinely terrible of a price it is. 3500 is necessary to get it up to snuff minimum and then you are nearly 10k into a REBUILT e36!? There is a beautiful silver e36 for 10.8k with no stories on CL. Looks like the rebuilt is pending sale over there though, so maybe I'm picky.

Where. I know about 10 people that would want one.
There is one m3 on there under 10k that claims to have a clean title and it pretty likely doesn't mean no accidents as is shown by many telltale signs. It just means it hasn't been written off.

fuck i've been looking at mustang gt's in that price range. if i could get a nice e36 m3 for under 10 i'd snag one. doesn't have to be no history either, just dont want a rebuilt.

I'll keep my eye out for you. Like I said before though, that silver one for 10.8k on CL right now is the one to buy if you want a clean one. There is one one there for 9 with a clean title that is richardmozis on heres buddy. The car looks like it has some minor quirks but its worth a closer look and could be a deal.

Well worth it. These euro spec cars scare me though. No way of really knowing their history, and as M car owners know, you cant just be changing the oil in these cars and call them maintained. Parts prices add up FAST. Still though, well worth a look. The fact its been for sale for a month that I know of though makes me wonder, as a euro spec 3.2L evo listed for 13k is well worth it. I wouldn't even sell my car for that.

I remember that car, it was at Tyee Imports a few years back. The Pirelli sticker on the bumper is the giveaway.

Good buy or money pit? Looking for a new dd and winter beater and the price on this Audi so sooo tempting. It's also a manual! Thought?

Why even risk it? What's so special about that car other than the magic word "Quattro"? or you just want the brand?

Since you said beater, I assume you want something cheap. There are plenty of other Japanese choices that are probably equally fun to drive and way more reliable.

That doesn't seem like a very good choice for a winter beater. Grab a $1000 Civic or something and spend the rest on a tropical vacation.

*Can* be a good buy, that one is probably around the right asking price. At $2500 I'd be more comfortable calling it a "good" buy. A few things to know about this generation of A4:

Front Control Arms - The ad says they've been recently swapped, but which ones? There are four control arms in the front suspension...and they should be replaced together. Back when these cars were new, they'd barely last 50k. Aftermarket replacements these days have a much longer life. I'd check to confirm the ones the current owner put in are of non-chinese origin.

Valve cover Gaskets, Valley Pan gasket - the 2.8L motor is a good, strong, long lasting motor. But it is prone to oil leaks. Replacing the above gaskets is a lengthy, involved process and any oil leaks should be carefully looked for. I'd never buy one without pulling the plastic engine covers off.

Quattroworld Independent Audi News, Audi Forums and more - Visit the forums specific to this vehicle, and ask them about the ad/car. The forum is full of extremely knowledgeable guys. I'm more of a 5cyl Audi guy, and my B5 chassis knowledge is 'Light' in comparison.

Interior - That particular car you're looking at has one of the worst interior combinations possible (in my opinion). Find a black interior for the best wear/look. Also, the photo showing the CD changer shows dirty trunk carpet. That car has been used hard, and put away wet.

That "paint scuff" on the side isn't a scuff, that car has been pushed against a pole or concrete pillar. Cheapest replacement will be to swap a wrecking yard door on.

Hmmmm...after thinking about it more, I'd pay $2250 or less for the car. And even then, you can find better.

2001 Audi A4 Quattro 1.8T -> 1.8T, infinitely more fun as a motor. Yes, at 295k the turbo life *could* be a concern, but the seller claims its properly maintained so if they can produce maintenance records I would tend to sway towards 'Safe bet'. You'd have to look up the timing belt interval for this engine, and confirm when the last one was done on this car. I suspect it's probably "due soon" and thus is either the real reason for sale or a great tool for bringing the price down. Confirm the car has always had the VW approved synthetic, that's a deal breaker on a 1.8T.

Actually the electrical hasn't been an issue on the B5 Audi's. The B5's were quite good. Anything older, and the issues are well known and documented. I think the B7's started using some ridiculous components like the Hazard switch/relay combo that costs you $175 when the flasher stops working for turn signals. But every B5/B6 gen car we've owned has been solid. VW's, for some reason, continue to be terrible for electrical.
