I believe mechanically they are quite solid given they're taken of, the VK V8's don't burn oil like the V6's.

More info here -> Nissan VK45DE Engine | Performance mods, specs, problems

Horrible on gas, tons of power, but god damn it if it still doesn't look really good on the road. :ahwow:

a set of sticky tires and a LSD, and it'll be nice for someone without the 911 tax!

If you don't mind RHD, B-Pro has one with half the km and a hardtop for the same price.

A LSD from Guards is $2895usd. Shipping, exchange ($1.30 for round numbers), and taxes at the border = $4506cdn. Then add labour, at least $1250 (this is not a complete pumpkin to re/re - this is simply a diff that must be installed in the housing and setup) plus taxes. Total $6k cdn for the LSD alone.

Porsche tax is the real deal. I went through this process for my BMW and it was still over $4k cdn by the time it was all said and done.

IMS bearing is a non-issue for the M97 in the Cayman S.

Someone here should get that car!

snowfarmer 09-11-2017 07:54 PM

I believe that it's less of an issue but was still an issue for the first gen M97 motor and if it needs to be changed the cases have to be split unlike the M96 that could be accessed by dropping the transmission and clutch.

Still, I wouldn't let that stop me from buying one of those cars for the right price.

Its good to be aware of any potential issues but the failure rate (1% or less) is minuscule enough that it shouldn't affect your purchase decision if the car isn't showing signs of IMS bearing failure when a proper PPI is performed by a qualified Porsche specialist (metal particles in the oil filter, etc). Then as long as you maintain the car diligently (don't follow the recommended oil change intervals because the factory intervals are too long) and don't abuse the car you're more likely to total your car than to have an IMS bearing failure in the M97. I sleep well at night.

The real danger is in the M96 engines in the Boxster and 996... those cars I would not buy unless the IMS bearing was fixed or the price is low enough.

I'd be more worried about the the E92 M3 rod bearing issue or the ringland stuff with the STIs than the IMS bearing in a Porsche Cayman S.

freelunch 09-11-2017 10:08 PM

I hear bore scoring is also an issue with 987.1 Cayman and Cayman S. (06-08) and the problem is worse if you track it due to oil starvation issues with the stock oiling sytem.
