I believe that it's less of an issue but was still an issue for the first gen M97 motor and if it needs to be changed the cases have to be split unlike the M96 that could be accessed by dropping the transmission and clutch. Still, I wouldn't let that stop me from buying one of those cars for the right price. Quote:

The real danger is in the M96 engines in the Boxster and 996... those cars I would not buy unless the IMS bearing was fixed or the price is low enough. I'd be more worried about the the E92 M3 rod bearing issue or the ringland stuff with the STIs than the IMS bearing in a Porsche Cayman S. |
I hear bore scoring is also an issue with 987.1 Cayman and Cayman S. (06-08) and the problem is worse if you track it due to oil starvation issues with the stock oiling sytem. |
