2007 Subaru Legacy Wagon - Manual. $7500. Unfortunately this is not a GT model but nice nonetheless. Good winter car.

What the hell is wrong with palm trees and fake ads, they seem to come together often

Alright RS, I'm gonna need a little help with this one. My normal friends are looking for a normal (read: boring) car. They're preferably looking for used, so before I send them to my dealership friends, I want to help them narrow down their options with CL good buys.

They're looking for: sedan, automatic, fuel efficient, durability, low maintenance. Looking to resell in the next 3 years, so something at the bottom of its depreciation curve?

I don't know much about normal cars, but I've recommended a Camry of around 2008? What are your thoughts?

EDIT: Budget is 20K

EvoSpider 09-25-2017 09:22 PM

You forgot to mention budget?

fuel efficient cars...what are their expected standards? some people like me find anything less than 13L/100km efficient, some need to be under 10L, 7L, etc.

Toyota/Honda are a good start, and i suspect they have a budget and wouldn't touch a car that's older than 10 years?

I'd also consider a SkyActiv (ie. 2012+) Mazda3. Mazdas don't hold their value very well, so they would be quite affordable.

They're coming from an 8th gen civic, so I suspect somewhere around and less than 9L/100km?

Is the skyactiv the problem engine? Or was that strictly the speeds?

Hmm... I'd still expect an 8th gen Civic to have some serviceable life left for the next little while. As long as they stay on top of maintenance (which should be pretty cheap), the car should be easily reliable up to 200k+ km.

Also, if they are coming from an 8th gen Civic, wouldn't your 2008+ Camry recommendation be rather odd? It won't be much newer than their current car.

Other than carbon build up, I am not aware of the SkyActiv engines being problematic. And carbon build up is sort of typcial for DI engines, so I wouldn't really blame that on Mazda.

The Speed3 is prone to engine mount problems, but the regular Mazda3 is not affected by that. Mazdas generally have fairly crappy paint that is very easy to chip. Plus, I found their rust-proofing to be generally poorer than Honda/Toyota. But given our climate, rust shouldn't be a problem.

I think if they still had it, they would be driving it. The 8th got written off in late August. Yeah the Camry recommendation around that gen wasn't for purpose of how new it was, more like the cars around that time are rather depreciated.

I've got a gorgeous boring 2004 Acura TSX, 100k. White on black leather. Everything works. Will accept 20k but Revscene discount of 8k if your friends are cool.

its actually kinda hard to buy a 'normal' car for $20k that is also at the bottom of the depreciation curve.. Any civic/camry kinda of car you buy for 20k is still going to have lots of room for depreciation. For 20k, if your goal is minimizing depreciation, you'd need something like an e39/maybe e60 M5 or e46 M3
