Or you meet some girl at the club, cum inside of her, find out shes only in grade 12, so you buy a Prada bag for her to make things right, she finds out the bag is a fake and decides to have the kid

Another lexus is300 with the "chiptronic transmission", must be posted by the same curber.
Numbers are different but the ad is basically copy and pasted. The sportcross does NOT have black painted original wheels, its the yellow one that does.
Friend went to look at the car. Brought cash. My friend gave a decent offer. Seller accepted. Seller wanted all cash up front but didn't want to delivery the car until a week later or until he bought a new car. Was the most WTF moment ever. Friend questioned the seller about that logic. Seller said something racist. We walked away.
Car was traded into Langley Mercedes for 5000 a couple months ago. Seller claimed to have bought it for 6500. 2 decs on the car. One was around 2k and another around 3k. Seller works at MB we believe. Almost whole car is repainted. Bubbling paint on hatch gate. Tires don't match. Needs front ball joint or sway bar link. Something clunks. Rear has rotational noise. Rear brakes are done. I didn't drive it buy my friend did. He said transmission or engine feels like has a bit of hesitation.

I'm the friend that toyota86 went with to see the Sportcross.
It was the shadiest transaction I've ever dealt with on CL. We met at King George station drop off area (first sign of shadiness).
Here is how it went down-
We showed up on time at agreed location. The seller was a guy named Cleo (2nd sign of shadiness) Oddly, the GF dealt with most of the car showing and bartering while the BF sat by the side. (3rd sign of shadiness) Checked out the car, took it for a short test drive. Car seemed to be decent shape while needing a little bit of work. The car also smelled a little bit of weed inside, but in this day and age I suppose its to be expected. I always wanted a Sportcross. So I gave an offer.
We brought cash, was a serious buyer, ready to take the car that night.
There was a few back and forth on the price, and she gave her lowest price that she'll accept, and in the end I agreed to pay her that amount.
Once we agreed on the price. I asked if I can take the car tonight since I had cash with me. (I just sold my car the day prior)
She said No, you can't take the car tonight because my BF lives in Langley and work in Burnaby and we need a car. We are planning to buy a new car this weekend. - I totally understand that and so I offered to put down a $500 deposit to hold the car until the weekend.
Then she said No, that's not possible I want the car fully paid for now, then you can pick it up on the weekend. I asked, so you want me to pay you fully for the car and then let you drive the car away?
She said, yes, that's how it works on Craigslist, I've sold tons of stuff on Craigslist and that how it works. I also work at a dealership and this is how it work. This is not China, so you might not understand.
At that point, I said thanks for your time, this is the end of our conversation and I got back to my car and drove away.
- the end.
I'm still a bit confused to the viewing last night. I think that if we weren't a group of 3 big guys, she was going to attempt to rob us or do something shady judging by how that went. Hope you enjoyed my shadiest transaction on CL story.

I would never give someone a deposit on a vehicle and I would never take a deposit for anything either. You're lucky things got worse and you walked away otherwise I doubt you'd have seen that $500 or the car again.

the only appropriate response when someone from CL/Kijiji/Buy and Sell groups asks you to "put down a deposit"

Even if you wrote a contract and then further took a picture of both driver's license? The contract in itself is legally binding, whether or not you want to persue the matter over $500 in a different story tho.

LOL
The only reasoning I can see for the cash first car later thing is (other than scamming the fuck out of you) is that this curber needs their next lump sum for the next car they were trying to flip and just didn't want to be stuck without a car to go around

I like how she said "this is not China" because in China you would laugh, get in the car, and just drive off.
And in a dealership you have binding legal contracts you sign off on listing out all parameters of the deposit deal at an actual establishment, not some hobo deal in the street where you take a piece of paper and a crayon and write shit out and shake on it
