I’d say that’s applicable to all modern cars other than a few exceptions. Cars are meant to be disposable nowadays, since the era of DIYable cars is essentially dead.

The N54 engine itself is quite reliable, its just the accessories and stuff that fail. I had one from 60,000 to 130,000 kms and had to replace spark plugs, injectors, coil packs, water pump, thermostat, coolant expansion tank and miscellaneous vacuum lines. I consider those to be wear items. That's not even close to $10,000 per year. I had the car for 5 years and that comes to much less than $1,000 a year which is not bad.
I had the turbos and HPFP replaced under warranty.
If you can find a car that has had those items taken care off then you should be ok. Its not as bad as people make it out to be.

the solution: make it NA ITB without DI
yeah the motor itself is decent but everything on it or around it fucks up.
IIRC forged crank on the N54

IIRC forged crank on the N54 | It will have like 200hp 180lbft then haha. But reliable!
Point is if you can find an N54 with records of those issues having been taken care of then it can be a good buy. They're such good driving cars.

The wife bought a 128i (still in the family) back in 2008 and its still going. I think we only replaced a lifter making rattling noise (under warranty) and valve cover gaskets (WOW 42,000km needing valve cover gaskets). Oh and the friggin windshield wiper fluid pump had a leak.
Otherwise its been good....ish. I would say that's the last reliable modern bmw engine ever made (n52). Thats only because its NA.
on a side note,
I remember reading an article about nissan engineers vs finance guys. Cant for the life of me dig up the article, but its something to the tune of they could have made a timing chain for the QG18DE engine or a timing belt.
They did a study and found the timing chain would improve reliability ratings (Nissan was pretty low at that time) for the cost XX dollar. The finance guys said it would not add any value since most of the QG18DE engines were going into Sentra's and other lowly compacts.
Engineers were asking for not only the timing chain but also aluminum block instead of cast iron to go with the aluminum heads that they were placing on these engines (more equal heating/cooling). In the end, the finance guys conceded the timing chain but denied the request for the aluminum block.
My dad's old 2001 Sentra suffered from head gasket issues due to their cheap ass decision to place aluminum heads on a cast iron block. Went 200,000kms and no timing chain issues, but 2 head gaskets. Otherwise, tranny was stout, CATS went a few times and the ECU corroded (under warranty)
I guess my point is, if BMW wanted to make a reliable car, they would have. They just dont.

If an engineerer is recommending a superior engineering solution for good reason (improving reliability seems like a darn good reason to me, esp when the Nissan numbers were low at the time), you'd think the bean counters would look at some longer term gains over the immediate cost savings... |

Not sure if real ad or not but the price is pretty good
Would be tempting to yank the motor out of my car and drop it in that ^

Every public company in any field is primarily driven to increase stock holder value more than actually making a great product. I work in the consumer packaged good industry in which most CEOs before came from the marketing departments. Nowadays, almost all CEOs are from the finance departments. That is very telling what most company priorities are......
