Wait. Compression test all within 6-7%... Pretty sure that's far above spec isn't it? Shouldn't they be within a percent or two of each other?

2007 Saturn ION Redline Supercharged with Competition Package and GM Stage 2 Upgrade
$5,810.00

Never thought I'd see one of these again - the odd cousin to the Cobalt SS/SC.

Apparently this red colour is the rarest of them all.

But for almost 6k you could start looking at the cobalt that had the Recaro interior and Brembo brake package. I’ve seen these redlines on CL for $2500 before (butbthey don’t last too long)

I may get flamed for this....

A Mk6 GTI with 133km for $9K, the seller makes no bones about the fact that it's a rebuilt title from a rear end hit. Similar base GTI's with a clean title are ~$14K. It would def need a really thorough PPI but not a bad deal for a commuter if it checked out?

2011 volkswagen GTI - $9000 (Delta)

Great quick everyday driver car.
2011 volkswagen GTI
6 speed manual
5 door hatch back
Cloth heated seats
Stage 2 chip makes the car even more fun to drive.
133,351 km

The car DOES HAVE rebuild status. It was like that when i bought it. Had a rear end hit that the hatch had to get replaced. Car drives great. Open to offers.

Will post more pictures of the inside soon

$9000 obo.

You wont be disapointed with this car.

Depends on the price, quality of work/parts, and condition.

I mean, if it’s half the price of a normal title and repaired well and passes a thorough PPI at a reputable shop, I’d consider it a good buy.

I hear you, I have friends that wouldn't drive a rebuilt title at any price and others who would if it checked out and the price was low enough. Different strokes.

I think it all depends if they have detailed photos of the damage pre-repair. I’d want to know what air bags went off, what panels and potetial unibody is bent etc. If it was bad enough, obviously hell no. Would I drive a rebuilt car? Yeah I might. Would I let my wife and child? Absolutely not. I’d want to know the car will perform in a crash at its absolute best possible

I see ICBC salvage cars all day. You'd be surprised how little damage, if any, can cause a car to be written off. You can't group them all together cause it depends on what, if anything, was damaged and how it was repaired.

I bought a 2016 Civic, stolen recovery for a song. No damage, just needed keys made. Still had to go through both inspections and get a wheel alignment. Only downside is the factory warranty is void.

I’ve bought a rebuilt miata once. It was $1100 and managed to squeal tires and needed only an oil change.

Had a slightly bend rad support. Drove great. Beat the crap out of it and sold it after. Made a few bucks too.

Really depends on the nature of the write off and repairs

How does a new car get stolen... isn't it push to start? So you'd need the fob?

can anyone confirm why cars get a "rebuilt title" ???

i've heard if the repair is over the cost of the car currently.
i've heard if a non oem part is used.
i've heard if air bags go off.
i've heard if its more than like 2 pannels.

anyone have SOLID reason why cars get rebuilt or is it dependent on car and person signing it off?

I think it’s based on the adjustor as well as the damage. Plus also what’s in the market as well.
I’ve seen some cars literally just needing like 1k worth of damage and still get written off. These days a headlight alone will cost 1k specially for high end vehicles.

100% I agree though I would never buy a rebuilt car without seeing some pics of the damage.
To me a rebuilt tittle is just a tittle for some vehicles.
They just get the bad rep due to idiots fixing shit when they shouldn’t. I’ve seen some really bad jobs with shit quality parts, shit fitment, shit paint job, just overall garbage.
But there’s some good ones that you can’t even tell they’ve been damaged

Solid reason is money. If it exceeds the amount of money the insurance company is willing to spend and then someone else buys the car and rebuilds it. Doesn’t matter if air bags go off or 2 panels or non oem parts.

As others have said, it's purely based on the cost to repair. I think its something like if the estimated costs exceed 75% of the market value, they'll write it off.

The reason you hear things like 'air bags' or '2 panels' is because both of those usually result in a more expensive repair. So it's not directly related to either, but those 2 in particular have a big effect on cost.

I had a big accident recently and spoke to ICBC about this.

Basically the condition is a moving target based on what's most economical for icbc.

They will give your car a market value dollar amount(actual cash value). If this actual cash value minus the salvage value is lower than the repair cost then its a writeoff.

So lets say your car's actual cash value is $30,000 and they think they can get 17,000 at auction. the difference is $13,000.

If your repair is $7000, your car is repaired. if the repair is $15,000 then it's written off.

As others have said, it's case by case. A few years back a mint turbo MR2 got written off because some idiot smashed out all the windows, nothing else was damaged but the cost to replace them all was too high.

My parents have a Toyota Sienna that has a rebuild title, but only because the VIN tags and interior pieces were stripped. Otherwise, it was fine. Thousands of reasons exist for rebuilt vehicles. You just need to ask and see how transparent the seller is.
