At least with the 05 and older, you can do it as a preventative maintenance item along with a rear main seal every time you do a clutch. Don't have to drop engine if you buy a MT. AT is pretty much double the time to do the IMS.
I've also seen the timing chain gear separate from the ims shaft as well as chain guides failing. Metal in the oil is usually ims but so many other things can crap out on these engines. The knocking sound is always nice. Nice deep streaks on the cylinder walls, usually number 6. That's just the bottom end.
Rebuilds start at 10-15k at most local shops if nothing is seriously broken. 15k for yard motor. 20+ if you want to make a 4.0. FYI Porsche won't sell you a long block. Only short block. If you have to ask, you can't afford it. Everything on the heads are sold separately.
There is no such thing as a cheap Porsche, you either pay up front, or pay in installments later.
That's enough fearmongering for today.

That's enough fearmongering for today. | The chances of the larger bearing failing are 1% or less and that's for cars that are not well-maintained or have longer oil change intervals. Knowing that and because I do all the required maintenance on time and change my oil every 5k I sleep well at night.
As long as the owner does their due diligence before buying and then maintains the car well there is no need to be worried by overblown internet fear mongering.
IMS bearing for 06+ cars is a rarer issue than say the E9x M3 rod bearings. While it is good to be aware of all of the possible rare issues, the 997 and 987 are quite reliable for their many owners.
Although an advantage of the fear mongering is that prices might go down and I can jump into a well-kept 997 |

A regular ep3 without the HFP kit or lowered is pretty gross. Friend of mine had a white EP3 with HFP kit and was slammed. Looked like a minibus or train at first, but it grew on me.

Seems like every car for sale in this city is some prick without a real job trying to make a couple hundred on some shady car flip.
If the car is worth it though, its worth it, regardless of the source.
