Which of these two is a better buy? Which is more reliable?
Looking for a fun DD to replace my Miata, either of these would probably for the bill. | Quote:

The N52 I would say is more bulletproof compared to the M54. If you get the 128i though, the E9x M3 control arms are a must do. I put them on my E90 330i and steering feel and directedness was improved drastically. | Quote:

How do these cars compare to the E46 BMWs and G35s of a similar year? | When they were new all the reviews unanimously picked the E46 over it for driving dynamics and rightfully so, however I would imagine as time has passed the Lexus has not ruined marriages or caused financial crisis otherwise for its owners lol... I find the power is okay not great not slow the manual is faster for sure and the engine is butter smooth I can’t even feel the downshifts with heel toe... revving in neutral the car doesn’t even vibrate... turning circle and road feel are amazing and the car is just so damn smooth. The shifter on the manual definitely isn’t as smooth as my MR2 and can be quite notchy especially when cold, took some getting used to.
Downsides are dated plastics on the dash, smallish backseat (doesn’t bother me but it’s asian sized for sure) and the trunk looks ok but it’s not big. They’re a small car by today’s standards, it’s the same size as a modern Corolla when I park next to one. Lowering really changes the makeup of the car my automatic had coil overs on it and it was much better than the stock setup.
I think the G35 is a really good car too the engine is more powerful I had no complaints about one I too on a 10,000km road trip once had a fun little tussle with a Maserati on the Pacific Highway in California and it held its own lol...

Why do you guys think the price point is so low?

Because its a 10 year old entry level BMW without an M on it, built in mass quantities. Its not new enough to be new, not old enough to be a classic. Its just a used car that got lucky by being ordered in a cool spec.

Because the market hasn't figured that out yet. They are a little softer than an E36 M3 from the factory, ie the rubber bushings and stuff are much more compliant and are totally garbage. However, the chassis itself is HIGHLY superior - both the front and rear suspension geometry are much improved, the motor is much lighter, wheelbase shorter, etc.
The 128i is the next E36 - the best inexpensive platform for a German track car that's out there. I'm looking forward to running mine at a few track days this year.

thats right.
Solid chassis. nice wheel base. deserves a shorter final drive and a mechanical LSD. the 128i is bang for the buck, analog BMW fun.
I know theres a few local late model LCI M sport 6 speeds with manual seats and no sunroofs.... theyre bound to pop up for sale in a few years.

Isn't the 135i the "poor man's 1M"? Does the 135i make a better track/driver's car or does that title belong to the 128i?
Curious to know, in case I want an upgrade..

Speaking from the experience of a friend of mine who is tracking a 135i he is constantly having heat soak issues and the ECU goes into limp mode so I’d say it’s not a very good track car.

135i is nice. when its working
128i will have way less issues and won't have the problems that make it... not run.
if you can afford the upkeep on 135i by all means, but if you want a fun, honest car thats need only basic repairs/ maintenance, the 128i is the one to live with.

The problem with Lambos is no one gives a shit about what paint they order because they will all get covered in some fucking Pokemon wrap or gold tinfoil camouflage straight off the lot.

Rather have just a radiator / thermostat / waterpump fail or leak than having to replace injectors, fuel pump and other turbo related stuff on the 135i.
Sure 135i is faster, but the 128i is a less complex machine.

The wife has a 2008bmw 128 and it's never let her down. We did the tensioner for the timing chain, valve cover gaskets, and some recalls with lifters. No other out of warranty repairs. The thing has around 60k and is beaten by Chinese female drivers daily (her mom drives it now because it's easier to drive and to park vs her es350) so I'm really surprised it held up so far.
The interior is starting to get a little bit squeeky as the plastics are getting loose. But the driving experience is still fantastic. The short wheelbase makes the car very lively but you also feel every inch of the road underneath you. Bumpy roads in Vancouver requires a visit to the chiro afterwards. That inline 6 is still a treat. so much torque and very smooth
