IMO it is not even very fair to compare economy vehicle to race inspired vehicle. How many 400 or 500+ HP motor are reliable that can be used 200k km or even 300k km? 2JZ is probably the only motor I could think of but since that Toyota decided not to make any race engine for general public consumers. I would assume one of the reason is because all the race engine after 2JZ is going to ruin Toyota's reliable reputation.
I've owned E60 M5 for 6 months, it's not even that nice to drive in the city due to SMG transmission. During the 6 months ownership with a low mileage example, the SMG pump failed, the thermostat sensor failed. Both would cost me $2000-$3000 each to repair if not covered by warranty. But it's not about the cost of repair, it is the fear that this vehicle will leave me and/or my family standard anytime, anywhere. So I sold it.
It might be my luck with BMW, my next E46 M3 constantly leaks oil/fluid that I have to visit the repair shop more than 3 times a year.
However I am still looking for a F80 M3 since BMW is the only company still offers manual transmission sedan...But there is no M car appears in good buy thread for long long time. |

2jz motors have like 325hp. There’s plenty of reliable motors in that range.

he already mentioned 2jz and as flexible/bulletproof as it is, was designed almost 30 years ago
and correction on the 2.0T G70 manual, it 'only' does around 6s in 0-60

I know he mentioned it, but seemed to imply it was the only reliable motor in the 400-500hp range, which it doesn’t fit in at all.

2JZ with some simple bolt on it's 400+ hp motor, but I know it's not stock.
R35 GTR's VQ38TT is fairly reliable I think, although transmission is not as good but still way better than E60M's SMG...

those elements command insane value.
VR38 V6 from GTRs are actually reliable if left stock. have quite a few guys on the north american GTR board with well over 100k miles on their stock motors on stock tune.
pretty impressive consider they dish out between 480-575hp depending on years.

very similar powertrain and i'd assume comparable cargo space

always saw it as a weird in-between of the Civic SiR, the old Civic Wagon and the CR-V
like the rx8-style suicide doors though

Oil consumption heard of common normal leaks (hot engine bay) and of course some turbos consuming oil (requiring rebuild for turbos)
Otherwise a normal ownership R35 that doesn’t get bagged on don’t blow up... but the thing is, who doesn’t bag on one? it’s an R35. I see only upping power levels and neglect are really the factors on shortening a R35 life.

God damn I miss my Element. Probably won't buy another one though, it's a money pit because of all the things that swap over from the DC5/EP3...
