Even if it clean, still an 18 yr old BMW. Unless its the M5 which is more desirable.

bcrdukes 01-03-2019 09:41 AM

It could also be that it needs another $7500 in repairs. (half joking.)

I'm on CL constantly looking at BMWs to buy, I thought that this one seemed cheaper than most with similar features. I don't think it's an amazing price as I am well aware of the potential maintenance (I'm on my third BMW from the 90s) but with the relatively low km I'm surprised it has been up for as long as it has. I was hoping someone here had gone to see it and had some dirt on it.

E46 pricing.... not sure if this is a handgrenade...

sonick 01-03-2019 10:49 AM

Ah of course it's from Splendid. They always have such neat cars.

Having owned and worked on many e39 and e38, I came up with a few observations when I read this ad. I'm judging this car based on the asking price. If it was a 97 540i6 for 4500, I could over look a lot of things. But this is listed for 16k with 200k.

My thoughts based on information from the ad alone...DGR coilovers is china/taiwan made budget suspension. Replica wheels, both sets. The M5 lsd swap could be good or bad depending on how it was done. Seems like a lot of common items have been addressed but unless oem or better parts were used, probability of failure is likely high. Example, FCP house brand tie rods fail within 3000km, URO m62 oil separator crap out in a week, hamburg technic engine mounts fail in 5000km. oem BMW parts are already pretty flimsy to begin with. It doesn't help when the aftermarket makes copies with even cheaper materials. No mention of power steering repairs or leaks seems odd. Everything leaks and the servotronic craps out on these if equipped. Also, suspension bushings wear quickly on these cars. At 200k, should be at least on its 3rd set of control arm bushings up front and had steering box adjustment and links overhauled done. Rear should have at least diff mounts and a couple arms replaced. Other things I would look into would be vanos, clutch, cluster dead pixels, shifter bushings and flex disc, maf, oil separator, rust around rear arches and gas filler, headlight leveling, saggy interior panels/plastics/fabric, door seals and vapor barriers? O2 and cats original? No mention of electrical issues? Post very specific about no water leaks, but what else still leaks... Just some things I would inquire about to start.

So it's probably not a "good buy" then

IIRC these love to consume turbo's around 160kms (indicated mileage in ad).
About 5k to replace at a reputable shop. No mention of it being done, means it's probably time (the real reason for selling).

Then there's suspension bushings, oil leaks etc. Most Engine related issues are in the link below:
https://www.bmwn54tuners.com/8-most-...gine-problems/

These are the most common N54 engine problems:
•High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) Failure
•Turbocharger Failure / Wastegate Rattle
•Leaky Fuel Injectors
•Leaking Boost / Chargepipe Failure
•Valve Cover Oil Leak
•Carbon Build-up
•Vanos Solenoids (2A87 and 2A88)
•Water Pump Failure

Sure, 6k seems reasonable. But to get it all up to spec, you're probably up to +10k within the first year or so.
I'd offer 3 or 4 at most.

sounds like it's worth the 6k ask
6k Japanese yen

Used to own one. Front was slammed and on monoblocks. Great car. Was a huge gas guzzler tho. The one in the ad looks pretty clean. Way lower KM than the one I had. Has good potential.

That wagon has been on sale for a couple of months now. I thought it would sell quickly.

Splendid also has a Civic Wagon for sale. No price listed.

They a lot of beautiful cars. The Peugeot is pretty sweet as well. I almost bought a Mustard Yellow 300CD W123 from him a while back but found my C123 shortly after.

Yours is the AMG variant.
I think you bought it from Tofu?

What's the usual monthly cost of gas on these?

No I didnt buy it from Tofu. Bought it from some Porsche collector.
I calculated it to be roughly 15 -16L/100km

They take 91 which sucks but nice driver if you don't mind gas price. $80 is roughly 500km

That's not terrible.

Has anyone here gone to see the E60 at Splendid? Curious about the price.

I haven't inquired about it personally but I know 2 years ago (yes, been on sale at least that long), its price was set at $37k. Japan import, wheels & exhaust are not original.

Not sure if price has come down or not.

I've been driving my IS300 for years on regular without any issues.

It is pretty terrible on gas though for the power output... still love the car, but it does eat a lot more gas than one would expect.

Could the efficiency be due to using regular? Or did you try both and notice no difference?

Prostrho 01-04-2019 11:04 PM

Used 87 and 91 on my IS300 previously and noticed no measurable diff in fuel econ.

Both got about 12.5-13l/100k normal city driving.

I could hear some slight pinging at WOT above 4000rpm but I rarely do that during street driving .

StanleyR 01-04-2019 11:36 PM

Tried mid grade on my IS350.
fuel economy was OK, but performance (idling, starting etc) was atrocious.

Never running anything less than prem. in it!
