^ I had a second gen for a while which I think is supposed to be better. It was still pretty bad though, the novelty starts to wear off. That being said it's a pretty fun car.

The one I bought was cheap and didn't appear to be well taken care of. I beat on it hard and sold it to a friend who continues to do so and it hasn't had any problems in almost 3 years.

Is it ever worth it to buy a rebuild? there are some crazy deals on rebuilds on CL..

Like, if youre just looking for a commuter car and u can get Civic, Corolla, etc. with 50,000kms for 2/3 the price of a non-rebuild.. might be some value there?

I guess it really depends on where the accident was.. but is it crazy to think if a rebuild drives fine, wasn't a front end collision, and has very low KM's there is some value in buying one?

If you get it properly inspected and/or plan on driving it to the ground, then sure, it may be worth it depending on the price.

Personally I avoid rebuilds altogether because the title scares people away (and I can't keep a car for longer than a year to save my life), but some older cars that target a certain demographic may hold its (diminished) value (ie. RSX Type-S, Mazdaspeed3, some European models, etc)

I'd only touch one if you're planning to keep it until it's scrapped and if you can tell why it was rebuilt. I co-bought a rebuilt 07 Tiburon for the Gambler 500 and I don't know who did the work but it's pretty fucked, I certainly wouldn't drive a car like that normally or try to have any hope of selling it.

I’ve owned and sold several rebuilds. 5 in total now including 2 Lexus LS400, Lexus ES300 and a Nissan Sentra. 2 were rear-enders, one was a front corner hit and the Sentra literally the bumper was broken and 1 headlight — not even structural. My 1968 Mustang is a rebuild from the early 1990’s. It qualified for collector plates after a full inspection recently.

Just do your due diligence and enjoy. Granted my friend did the rebuild work so I was confident what I was getting, but I had no problem selling the ones I owned as long as I set my expectations reasonably for the price I would get.

I was looking on the ICBC website and it mentions that you need to send photos as a part of the application for collector plates. Is an in-person visual inspection also required?

My vehicle is modified so I applied for modified collectors plates (1974 and prior only) which requires a provincial inspection

Rebuilt, no thank you. Most likely cheapest parts used, not fixed properly to make the most profit possible. If it’s rebuilt due to interior theft, sure. Those are pretty rare these days. Rebuilt you should be saving 30-40%

You'd be surprised how little it takes to write off a 10-15yo car. Remember, labour rates are high. Cheap parts? What, like repop fenders and TYC lights? Depending on the car, who cares? None of that dictates how the car runs and drives.

I'd be more concerned with pre-accident pics and pics taken during the repair process. All should be available from the rebuilder, since they're required as part of the inspection.

I've done a few rebuilds and all the repairs were either bolt-ons or re/re from spot welds.

You'd rather have a car full of squeaks and rattles from an interior that's been taken apart and put back together than one that had a headlight and bumper replaced? Maybe a trunk lid and rear tails? What's cheap parts to you? Almost every part used in autobody rebuild or accident claim is aftermarket nowadays or they buy from wreckers.

It takes very little to write off an older vehicle. If it's like a 3 year old BMW, okay, different story that's had MAJOR damage and I'd be very wary.

if it's rebuilt it better have a document with buncha of photos showing before during and after

not "it drives straight as an arrow", "pulls just as good" or "dunno previous owner lol"

Dude judging buy your signature block you have a 1999 Acura Integra, you think you're going to find factory OEM panels for that if it gets in an accident?

Even if your username is still accurate when the was the last time VR6 was in a GTI? Same deal.

Your car is getting fixed with aftermarket.................. anyway, back to the good buys as you said!

I think your best bet is if you're in the situation I was in where I was able to choose vehicles I wanted from ICBC to bid on from auction and then my friend fixed them for me (although I did a fair amount of work too). Then you know how it was fixed... I would say most people are curbing for profit and fixing as cheaply as possible. That said!!!! It's much much much more difficult to pass the provincial inspection now, shops don't take bribes or look the other way for a buddy like they did even 4-5 years ago... so I think there's less chance of getting completely owned by something now than it was in years past.

If possible, get it inspected at a bodyshop you trust, not just a mechanic inspection... get someone with an eye for collision repairs to look at it.

This is true. A guy at work had a Saab 9-3 Aero x (the nice one) and he got rear ended. No frame damage, just bumper pushed in. They wrote off his car even under his numerous and constant protest. I guess cuz they don't make those parts anymore for the Saab and ICBC deemed it not repairable.

Send me year/make/model and I can get pre-repair pics, if it's in ICBC's auction database.

HuD_91gt is now carless. Revscene, get your act together and find me a lowish mileage <150k diesel SUV, small pickup, or minivan with a tow capacity of at least 3500lbs. $7-15,000. Vehicle and condition dependant. Obviously want to stay on the low side.

I’ve scoured every ad on Craigslist. So far every vehicle I went to look at is absolute junk. I feel the sale of my TSX was a bad move. Lol. Pristine
