LOL~ I've enjoyed the family MkV GTI (a 2007 MY) during its 9 year stay with us. IIRC, it had the belt-driven EA113 engine, which was supposed to be more reliable than the newer chain-driven EA888 engine. Off the top of my head, I think we only had the following bigger problems:
- coolant sensor / reservoir issue x2
- 1 seized brake caliper
- oil consumption issues
- a number of factory issued TSBs and recalls that were all taken care of at the dealership, free of charge, including one or two where the car had already been out of factory warranty, but VW extended it to all owners anyway
There was supposed to be a cam follower issue that affected that generation of engines, but we were never even aware of the issue until the buyer mentioned it to us when we sold the car.
I remember the oil consumption issue getting progressively worse over the course of our vehicle ownership (since new). From not burning any oil, to needing only 1/2 quart between oil changes, to needing a quart between oil changes, to burning almost 2 quarts between oil changes, it was what it was. We took care of the car and always did all the required services (sometimes doing them early, like the DSG services), and the car gave us some sufficiently reliable service in return.
I wouldn't complain it was a POS, other than the times when I had to change out the various light bulbs. Now whichever German engineer that designed those really need to commit seppuku, because the guy obviously did not consider serviceability when he did them up.

...so I just recommended that car to a buddy. Should I take t back? Haha. Replacing his ‘99 civic hatch. He wants a similar car with more power. He likes low maintenance haha. I thought the cam follower was the only issue.

Some of you guys have stronger minds than I lol.. I couldn’t bear to drive a vehicle that is constantly having maintancne issues..
I’m still driving my 2000 F150 I’ve had for the last 10 years, in that time I had to replace my wiper assembly and re-thread my spark plug cylinders 3 times and that’s the total extent of “problems” I’ve had over the 10 years. MAYBE 3 weeks of total downtime in my total ownership of this truck and 1.5 of that downtime was due to it being Xmas and not being able to bring it to my mechanic lol
Mechanical issues are stressful af when they happen rarely, some of you BMW guys must either be crazy or just stupid

I can have a piece of shit to drive or a piece of shit to repair. I’ve chosen the latter. Either way it sucks lol.

German cars are the most responsive/fun to drive in my experience. You have to pay to play.
I have 3 kids so I own a Honda and a Toyota

Mechanical issues are stressful af when they happen rarely, some of you BMW guys must either be crazy or just stupid | some of us like spending hundreds and hundreds + a whole weekend wrenching every 5k

I can pull a water pump or my differential case, but without a proper setting to do so it’s a nightmare. If you’ve got a proper garage with tools it’s one thing but to change a head gasket or some valve seals on the side of the road, that’s literally a nightmare to me, and I’ve done a few diff engine swaps, tranny swaps, suspension conversions etc. not a noob to turning a wrench, im just experienced enough to know what it involves lol.

I’d say that’s a good deal. The homemade versions go for 7-15. At least that was built by Carerham. As close to real as you can get. Better hope your tiny, I can’t fit.

They are just on facebook asking how to weld a diff, what oil to use, and rolling their fenders with toilet brush handles.

But I don't think I can see myself dailying a generic Honda, Ford, or any other reliable economy cars. To generalize for the BMW guys, the pain in owning one, is worth it. Funny thing is I had the explain the same thing to my gf yesterday, as it was a pain to drive her numbingly boring 2nd gen Mazda 3 around.
Don't you need tools in general for car ownership? Albeit BMW ownership probably means you have a lot more tools. My tool collection from the Civic to now has grown significantly from 0 to many. I think everyone should have an unreliable car (that you can DIY on) at least once in their life. I've definitely learned a lot about wrenching in my 1.5 years of BMW ownership. Quote:

If he wants low maintenance AND doesn't want to wrench (or learn how), stick with the easy Japanese economy cars. Anything is faster than a EK hatch LOL.

But bro I can get your blinkers to blink 3 times a second instead of 2. Headlights turn off 10 seconds after car turns off instead of when turned off. SICK.
