dunno if this'll make you feel better at all, but the places that give it out for 'free' probably just charge more for the wheels/tires/mount-balance, etc.

i've bought from that place several times in the late 90s and early 2000s before i started buying online from US sites.

always thought they had pretty good prices and didn't rip me off on the labour like other tire shops did. One time I remember getting new front brake pads + machine rotors for exactly the same price as your hubcentric rings lol

anyways, instead of getting in an argument about ripping you off, did you ask nicely first if you could return the rings unused and say that you found out you didn't need them?

^ yea I called and asking about that, and they told me I shouldnt have bought them if I didnt like the price (I know, I know), said I couldnt return them, then hung up on me. And I can honestly say I was speaking to them totally calm and as nice as I possibly could.

I guess I was more choked at the way they treated me after I spent so much money there, than the $60 itself..

Which is fair. If you were being reasonable, and spent a bunch of money there, they do owe you speaking to you with respect.

You need to spam this story all over social media and get the Internet mad at them for ripping you off! That'll learn'em! It worked for bringing down a pizza joint, why not tire shops?

I bet /b/ would have a field day with this story.... er... unless they figure out that crying about being "overcharged" $60 on a $2000 job simply because you ASSumed is really lame, and turn on you instead...
Spoiler!

Hey thanks for the advise, but that's all I was looking for is some advice/opinions. Excuse me for wanting to be treated fairly after spending a ton of money. Respectable customer service should be given regardless of the amount.

Thanks lowslide, but it went perfectly fine in my eyes. I asked the Internet for opinions and that's what I got, whether it be positive or negative. I'm sure you're hoping I'm crying in a corner regretting complaining about this, but thanks to these posts I actually do feel better about it.

I'm still not happy with the way I was treated when I respectfully brought to their attention a concern of mine, and won't be returning to them for my winter tires in a few months, nor will I be returning for when I need new summer tires when I chew through these (I'm sure they won't last a month ). Thanks for everyone's input!

Paid over $600 for new tires and an install, which included aluminum hub-centric rings that were needed for my rims. Ended up not even getting the rims put on my car because I had the wrong lugs, but thats besides the point. They charged me $60 ($15 each) for the aluminum rings, which everywhere else cost $15 for all 4, or are even thrown in for free when installing tires.
The gentleman installing my tires, David Ong (I believe its the owner?) gave me the option of plastic rings for $10, or aluminum for $15, where I thought he meant for ALL 4. Apparently not.

I just called them back and asked if they made a mistake, and the lady who answered said that I should have not taken them if I didnt like the price, argued with me a bit, then hung up.
I was kind of in a corner since I was under the impression they were needed to install my wheels, so I didnt question it at the time. But now since my wheels arent even on the car, I'm kind of choked, and would like them to charge me the proper price. I'll even pay up to $30 for them, but not $60.

So, what are my options here? I am going down there tomorrow to hopefully speak with David in person, but am expecting the cold shoulder again and them telling me to piss off.
Anyone have any success dealing with small family shops? I would like to go about this reasonably, but it doesn't seem like they're willing to do the same..
Gave you your first ever fail for this post for the following reasons;

1- Your assumed "proper price" is incorrect.

2- You titled this as "ripped off", you are just a pissy moany consumer, you were not ripped off.

I'm sure we have all felt "ripped" off of something. Example, you buy a part and a few days later, find the same part somewhere else for way cheaper.

Just let it go, your time is worth more than the $60, if you go back and forth to deal with the shop.

Then i realized i missed out on 5 Caramel machiatos.

You are making a thread over 60 dollars and complaining. They didn't "rip you off". you agreed to pay that. Every business charges different. Instead of wasting your time on here go to work and make that 60 bucks up and more? You paid 2 grand for wheels. Who cares about 60 bucks? It's nothing.... maybe their cost is more or they are using a better product then the other shops?

Am I the only one who thinks the OP really isn't bitching about the $60? Rather that he feels the shop tried to slide in overpriced hubcentric rings (and succeeded).

I think it's a shame these smaller shops try to make a an extra buck this way. The whole idea of going to these shops is for the exact opposite. Honesty, and superior customer service. However, they are free to charge what they want. It just sucks when you know you paid more for something, when you didn't have to.

It's also too bad about the way the shop handled it. If you were calm about it like you said, then there was no need for them to be snotty, or hang up on you.

Just sell the rings since you don't need them. No, you won't get $60 for them, but maybe enough for a case of beer?

some people say they are, some people say they aren't. I would use them if i was running extended lugs because they take some pressure off the lugs. For any car with after market rims a torque wrench + star pattern is good enough to get the rim seated correctly (in my opinion anyways) .... that's how I've been doing it on all my cars and I haven't run into any problems yet. If there's another reason to use them that I'm missing, feel free to chime in but I always felt they were of no use to me (my tire shop also tried to sell them to me)

It also helps prevent vibration at high speeds.

Well then he should have said, "Hell no, that's way too expensive, don't even bother, I'll get them elsewhere!" Or if they already put them in, he should have said, "Hell no, that's way too expensive, take them out, and I'll get them somewhere else!"

They told him a price, he ASSumed it was something other than a per-unit price... that's not being "ripped off", that's just making an ASSumption, and it happens to everyone at one time or another. It's happened to me - all I can do is say, "Well, shit... lesson learned, DO NOT ASSUME."

I've also had to deal with customers who have ASSumed - some will still do it no matter how clearly you spell things out, and then grumble and complain about being "ripped off".

You might think when someone drops $2k on rims and tires, a shop would be happy to throw in the rings as a perk (especially since they probably cost the shop about a buck each). Some will do that, some will try to boost their margin on those little items. Different ways of doing business; get over it and go somewhere else next time. Bitching about it online just makes you look like a whiner (well, not YOU specifically).

Welcome to the retail world! Shops, dealerships etc. do this all the time. For all we know the salesmen packaged everything as a bundle for $xxx price and OP said Yes and then finds out he could have gotten the rings for cheaper.

Op should have questioned if it was for 4 rings or just 1, remember, he waited three hours to get everything mounted
