Wow. I knew mustangs were expensive to insure, but I had no idea the STi was so bad.

too many rally-wannabes crashing subarus, and mustangs usually hibernate in the winter.

Mustang i figured right around $350, so it being cheaper was nice, but the STi being so expensive? It just doesn't make sense. 4dr's instead of 2, 126 less horsepower, AWD vs RWD, 2.5l instead of 5.0, 4 cyl instead of 8 etc etc, grand total savings of $2 epr month. Seems weird.

EDIT: I'll quote the insurance info so people don't have to look back a page;

Heh, and you all thought I was kidding when I said my insurance was almost $480~/month on the first year with GAP insurance.

They calculate theft, collisions and something else into the price of your insurance.

This is where it gets dumb, the impreza, WRX and STi all share the same statistics, and if I remember correctly, it's the 06/07 WRX that keeps getting stolen, jacking up the price.

A lot of STI's also get totalled, and it's just over the next HP bump making it even more expensive.

u gotta take into account how much it will cost to fix a car.. when i worked at subaru our advisor was suggesting after market brake setup from dales because it was almost half the price subaru would quote for a brake setup.. i think it was almost 6g in some cases.. parts for the sti are not cheap. so if they have to replace a fender, headlight, grill and maybe a wheel i wouldnt be surprised if the bill was in the 10g+ range.. all cuz some kid wanted to ken block and didnt pull it off.. thats assuming no structural damage was done

ps be careful when pushing a subaru.. dat understeer! ive never driven something that understeered under power like that... deffinetly needs a larger rear sway to even the balance out

I was at 20% off when I paid that for insurance, I'm now at 35% and pay substantially less, full coverage was around $2.8k/year last time I checked with my rates.

2012 Subaru STI Sport Tech @ 41.5k, and I was 21 when I bought it with a clean driving record.

Keep in mind they offered that full replacement insurance that added an extra $1000 on top, so if I decide today I want to smash the STI into a pole, the insurance pays off the car and I don't owe anything.

I'm sorry but you'll never hit deep snow going to BW. AWD and LSD's don't do jack for winter driving. I would wager part of the reason the STi insurance is so high is due to the overconfidence people get winter driving with AWD cars that lands them in more accidents.

You don't get it, as usual, i can think of a bunch of times i've been stuck in snow up to the point you plow snow when you open the door, whether it be a day of HEAVY snow on cypress, parked overnight in whistler, whatever. Also, "AWD doesn't do jack for winter driving" Are you kidding me? Having all 4 wheels spinning sure helps in that situation. As for the rest of it, It sure is nice to have all those goodies that an STi has on the occasional track day.

What's your goal here? I don't get your endgame? I should just buy a Mustang because i don't "need" an STi?

Good tires trump all (along with not driving like an idiot), I'm just saying don't drop extra money on LSD's and AWD just because you think it'll help in the winter because good tires make all of it a moot point. Those times you were in deep snow, were you actually stuck with a 2WD vehicle and good tires?

If you'll actually make use of it otherwise or you prefer the STi over the Mustang for other reasons then never mind but you seem very hesitant about any kind of track duty with your current car.

Any Mustang owner already gets prejudged as rev happy burnout knob and you'll be guilty by association by everyone who hates mustangs and mustang owners
Pick the STi it's like deciding whether or not to screw Britney Spears or Selena Gomez

Yes. I was driving a 2007 Civic Si, stock ride height, running brand spanking new snow tires. Ironically enough, i was pulled out to a plowed road (on Seymour at the time) by an STi. I'm not buying it for snow whatsoever, that's just a nice bonus of the STi imho, i'm seriously considering buying it because i absolutely loved the way it drove.

I am super hesitant to track my current car, insurance is a reason, but i'll get over that, but my car snap oversteers. Badly. You're taking a corner, no problem, then suddenly back end snaps out and it's almost un-correctable. On a track, that can be bad. VERY bad.

EDIT: I actually found a picture of that particular day i'm talking about, happened a few more times that winter as well:

if you want to get even more confused, i still remember my wrx wagon long ago being $200 cheaper to insure than a sedan

have you compared service costs yet? with the mileage you accumulate you are going to hit some major maintenance milestones very quickly.

3 diffs = $$$$ to service and repair

if you have 1 tire issue.. you need to buy all 4 otherwise say good bye to the diffs

brembo brakes are not cheap..

boxer engines can get costly to repair as nothing except the alternator is accessible

asides that its just your general maintainance

^ you shouldn't have to do much more than the fluid changes to the diffs so I wouldn't worry about them much. I'm not sure how the STi front diff is set up but it might only be one more fluid container to change than a RWD car.

The brakes aren't cheap but depending on how you use them they should last a while anyways. The biggest pain is having to have 4 perfectly identical tires on the car, but that's only a problem if you constantly damage tires.

There's your problem right there

Looking at that pic I would say most vehicles without good tires would have problems with that, I can't imagine the mess that would create mid-day at Big White considering some of the piles of junk people manage to get up there.
