Depending on how much minutes/data you need it might be around the same price to go on a cheapo plan and buy the phone outright. You also get an unlocked phone and some 0 dollar subsidized phone you can craigslist or use as a backup.

HonestTea 09-11-2014 09:09 AM

I think it's better to buy the phone outright in most cases cause of the $80 plan minimum.

Similar for Bell $65 for consumers $55 for business.

My fido $50 retension plan was considered as "max plan" and still is if i wanted to do hardware upgrade, so I think it is still doable if you try. I got my 5s during boxing day for $129 with 2 year agreement under"max plan" and I'm still on my $50 dollars plan.
Inquired for gf 2 days ago, i can get s5 for $100 with 2 year agreement while staying with her $50 plan

Apple financing Toronto Dominion. - Apple Store (Canada)

Btw, iPhone 6 64GB in US is $749... in Canada it's $859 :( BS i tell ya

It's sad to see that Fido is no longer a competitive with their price plans. I'm currently on a promo plan from Fido that is meant for minimum usage and to keep the line active (since I no longer live in the country.) However, when I had left, I was paying $55/month unlimited calling, texting and 1 GB data and now I would have to pay $75/month for the first year and $80 for the remaining year to be illegible for an iPhone 6 at the usual subsidized pricing. This 2 year contract non-sense is worthless if we are paying considerably more.

mos_skeeto 09-11-2014 12:34 PM

Agreed. It's almost like they're like: Ok force us to go with 2 year contracts. We'll screw everybody even more.

Paying 70-80 bucks a month for a small amount of data is ridonk. On top of that having to pay a few hundred for a subsidized iPhone is even more ridonk.

Even with the exchange rate so shitty, buying in USD is still cheaper in the end.

Y'all need to get on wind. YA the reception isn't as good and stuff but overall I'm way happier than when i was with fido. Unlimited everything and paying $30/mo is worth it.

threezero 09-11-2014 02:19 PM

^so wind support the iPhone now? Back when I was thinking of switching wind doesn't support the iphone

No not officially. But any model with aws can work on it. U then just need to put in some server info to activate mms and stuff on it.

I am currently contractless with Fido on a $39 plan + 10% discount, includes 600 mb, unlimited messaging, 450 minutes, voicemail, call display. Would Fido force me to get a Max plan in order to do a HUP?

If so, do other carriers offer a better plan for the subsidized iPhones? I'm pretty happy about my plan right now (could always use some more data but it's not crucial).

Based on their site, yes you'd need a Max plan. If you do the math though, you probably save enough over 2 years buying the phone outright and keeping your current plan.

Ha we have the same plan. Anywho, yes if you get a subsidized iPhone you have to get their stupid expensive max plan. I bought my last iPhone outright because it was cheaper to but you gotta do the math:

Take the $ of new iPhone plan - $ of your current plan
Multiply by 24
Add the price of the iPhone that's subsidized

See if it's cheaper to buy an unlocked one from Apple.

kcl38 09-11-2014 04:04 PM

I thought the way Fido did it was you can get any phone you want on any plan, the amount of discount just varies based on whether its standard, max, etc?

I got the $65 5GB Standard plan that was offered for around a week in August (off contract). When I was signing up for it they ensured me I would be able to get the new iPhone, just with less subsidy.

Nabatron 09-11-2014 07:49 PM

Are any of you guys staying up to pre order or just going to get it in store on the 19th

I phoned Fido Customer Service and they told me I didn't have to change my plan at all to get the subsidized phone... Not sure if the support staff just doesn't know the rules or she's telling the truth :S

shenmecar 09-11-2014 08:04 PM

9:00 on the dot and the Apple Store is down.

HonestTea 09-11-2014 08:09 PM

It goes live at 12am PST..no?

Hondaracer 09-11-2014 08:12 PM

will rogers have reservations tom? aka worth staying up till after midnight?

Nabatron 09-11-2014 08:31 PM

Yeah should be up at 12 hopefully its no fucked like how the iphone5 pre orders were! I'm hoping they just have a shit load of iPhone stocked up at the apple store!

Hondaracer 09-11-2014 08:42 PM

hmm.. so i'm considering switching over to the shared plan they offered me two weeks ago and try to use that as leverage to waive upgrade fee and get a second phone

beleive it was 8 gigs unlimited everything, some crazy long distance package, split between two people for $140

basically am paying almost 80 now, i'd say about $200 on my HUP fee and then my GF could sell her 5S get out of telus for free and use money for HUP with rogers

dangonay 09-11-2014 08:49 PM

This is the first year I won't be pre-ordering. With previous iPhones it was easy - similar sizes and design.

Now I don't know which size to get and I want to hold them in my hand to try out before plunking down that much cash for one.

Sir_Loin 09-11-2014 09:00 PM

Just a tip don't order through a browser or computer. I was able to get my 5 unlocked through the Apple Store App on my 4 at the time on wifi, the link on the apple store app went live 2 min before 12AM PST, so I was able to receive my 5 on launch day. Make sure your credit card billing/shipping info is updated and saved on your itunes account for faster processing.
