The 5 is perfect size for me I think but I may be tempted to go bigger

Well, they completely ripped off webOS with iOS 7, so why not wireless charging, which Palm had over 5 years ago?

Not that I'm complaining as I quite enjoy iOS 7 and absolutely love wireless charging; just find it funny how long it's taking other manufacturers to catch up to what a now defunct company had in 2009 ...

Ran the usual benchmarks on iOS 8 and compared them to iOS 7 on my iPad Air. Overall, the iOS 8 beta is running about 3-4% faster than iOS 7 did with one benchmark coming in at 2% slower and the rest anywhere from equal to 8% faster.

Not a huge increase in speed, but pretty good as I would expect a beta to actually run slower.

Last one day without the battery dying.

Easy! Don't use your phone:ilied:

hellothere 06-03-2014 06:26 PM

Those saying that 4.7" or 5.0" are too big are the ones that most likely haven't tried using a larger phone. Once you go big, you can't go back!

Gucci Mane 06-03-2014 07:04 PM

im currently using a nexus 5. with my spigen neo hybrid case on it feels too big.

Performance within an app is one thing, but how about when apps have to load and swap a lot of information into RAM. Switching between apps almost always requires the app to be restarted in ios7, is that the case with 8? Also games designed for newer devices will have problems continuing to run on the air or ipad 2, since they run out of memory quickly. Does 8 help solve that, or does it make it worse?

Benchmarks are one thing, a great way to show off hardware performance. However real world performance is another issue all together. The only apps that run decently on ios on older hardware like the air and ipad 2 are the integrated apps. Anything not integrated will have these issues. Which sucks for me, because I prefer to use pocketcasts over podcasts, gmail over the email app, and chrome over safari. But the combination of those 3 apps renders the ipad 2 unusable for task switching, and extremely slow within the apps. It would be great if ios 8 helped, but I have a feeling it's just going to make things worse, and will probably deprecate even newer hardware like the iphone 5 and ipad retina.

Wrong. I used a Note 2 for a while. While the larger screen was nice SOMETIMES, it just felt too large to be using for long periods of time

Ulic Qel-Droma 06-04-2014 02:12 PM

my only incentive to go the ultra large screen is not the actual screen, but the battery life LOL!

Well I have a 5.5inch phone now (find 7a) and it seems ok the phone itself actually doesn't feel that big to be honest. But yes once you use a bigger screen you can't go back. Heck even when using s s4 the screen feels tiny lol. Looking at my sister iphone 5s it feels like a toy.......

Hakkaboy 06-04-2014 03:07 PM

I think Nexus 5 is the perfect size for those who don't want to be "too big". You guys should really try to pick it up and handle it for a few days.

However, as a Note 2 owner, I wouldn't be able to downgrade the real estate and am looking forward to the Note 4 or equivalent

"older hardware like the air and ipad 2" Since when is the "air" older hardware?

The biggest problem with the iPad 2 is the 512MB memory. So it's always going to be hampered. That said, Apple has now made their browser engine available to 3rd party apps instead of the generic UIWebView. This means browsers like Chrome or Dolphin will perform much faster. Browser windows opened in apps like Facebook or Twitter will also benefit. How much difference this makes we'll have to see, but it was a significant complaint from developers.

I also wish Apple would stop supporting older hardware. I think the 4S and iPad 2 should have been the minimum for iOS 7 and the iPhone 5 and iPad 3 should have been the minimum for iOS 8. That would have reduced the complaints from users of the oldest devices and guarantee a minimum level of performance.

While I understand Apple wanting to make the newest version available on the widest selection of hardware, extending support for 4 years after a launch is too much, IMO. The 4S came out in Oct 2011. So it will be a full 3 years old when iOS 8 comes out. It will also receive all the point updates for another year until iOS 9 comes out. That's 4 years of operating system support & upgrades. They could cut that back to 3 years (2 year old devices getting the latest release and one year of updates). It's still generous. Especially compared to the dismal state of OS updates on many other manufacturers.

Sorry, I was thinking of the ipad mini which has the same specs as the ipad 2 but with a smaller screen. Unless they made a new one? It's hard to tell since they use the same name over and over for completely different hardware.

Looking at this chart, it looks like they have a new one, but you can still buy the old one with 512MB of memory:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...0fbe073e4c.png

iOS 7 is too bloated for any device with such a small amount of ram. I agree that they should have set minimums for the OS, but it shouldn't be 4S and ipad 2/mini, it should be iphone 5/ipad air/ipad mini with 1GB ram whatever it's called/ipad 3 or third gen or retina or whatever it's called.

I can see why they did it though. By allowing insufficient hardware to install an OS, with no way to easily go back, they essentially just made your device instantly obsolete. So now your 2 year old iphone 4s, which is otherwise viable until software starts requiring the new OS, is completely useless and now you need a new one. It also means the ipad mini with 512MB, which apparently you can still buy, and iphone 5C which was introduced a few months ago, are obsolete the moment you buy them. This isn't "generous" it's devious and rather brilliant :)

.Renn.Sport 06-04-2014 09:43 PM

Apple's memory compression technology basically reduce its need for more ram. The 1GB ram on my 5s is far more useful than having 3GB on my note 3.

highfive 06-06-2014 09:23 AM

We've been spoiled. I still remember back in the day where woah you have a cellphone? to woah you have snake 2 on your cell phone?

Now we bitch about tiny little things on our phone. Oh it's too slow oh it lags when we change apps.

It's so awesome to be a consumer today. I currently have an iphone 5. Going to see what's coming out in fall, Iphone 6, Note 4, Nexus?. Going to play with it and see which one I like.

If the rumours about apple using the lightning port for headphones is true, I'm done with it.

edit: http://www.forbes.com/sites/gordonke...l-makes-sense/ this is a reference for it... though it is purely speculation. Other sites talk about similar stuff as well.

Ludepower 06-06-2014 01:56 PM

Apple has always been a prick but we've been used to it.
They make a beautiful solid phone but all their proprietary bullshit and ecosystem is warring thin on me.

If the iphone 6 doesnt WOW me. I'll be switching to the galaxy.

nabs 06-06-2014 03:26 PM

I still don't know why people aren't causing a fuss with apple about their shitty ass quality charging cables. They are just forcing people to buy new ones every 3 months or so.

My old blackberry charger still works in perfect condition. All my USB cables still work in perfect condition. I take amazing care of my cables and stuff just because I hate buying them, but after 3 months, it's like the iPhone charge cables have a timer or something to rip to shreds for no reason.

That.. Along with the rumors about the headphone jack. I don't think i'm going to buy another iPhone, i've bought them because of their simplicity but the constant money im spending buying charging cables and such, and the lack of compatibility with other equipment I use and having to buy dongles and other things, its definitely not worth it in the long run.

Its weird no one mention Metal in this thread. With Metal, the PS4 and Xbox One could have a serious threat incoming. It was just amazing to see that they could make the A7 chip have performance of a PS3. Can't imagine how powerful it is when paired with an A8. The next Apple TV will probably have gaming capability with the quality close to the PS4 or Xbox One.

I think saying the A8 will get close to PS4/One is a bit of a stretch. However, there's no doubt the A8 is going to be quite capable as a gaming processor, especially if Apple continues with their trend of doubling processor performance with each new version.

And to think Apple is still only using two cores and keeping the clock speed down while everyone is running insane clock speeds (for ARM mobile) and maxing their core counts.

SkinnyPupp 06-06-2014 09:20 PM

A7 is powerful but it's sort of wasted on handheld games, since the only ones that make money are shovelware pay to win titles. And if they try to make a 'console' type device (like a new Apple TV with A8) it will have the same problem as the Ouya (but with more power).. so it is sort of in between. Besides, Apple have shown that they have no interest in gaming at all.
