Based on a single good half-season. I mean, Pavelec was the best goaltender for a few months in 2010, then he fell off the face of the earth. Decent goalies can be very impressive in short bursts, but the really talented goaltenders are solid month-to-month, year-to-year.
He's never been a starter and now he's 30 going on 31. Career-high is 34 games in a season (and that's behind a rather unimpressive Backstrom since Lemaire left). He's never really had the conditioning or the talent to be a 60+ game starter and, obviously, now having MS means he likely never will.
It wasn't practice, apparently. It was an off-ice altercation with a teammate.
The Minnesota Wild have suspended goaltender Josh Harding after he broke his foot while kicking a wall, according to a report in the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
The move comes as the Wild agreed to a new contract with another goalie, Darcy Kuemper.
After battling during the summer over whether Kuemper should get a one-way or two-way deal, the Wild and the goaltender agreed to a two-year, $2.5 million contract on Thursday night.
It’s a one-way deal, meaning that he will get paid the same regardless of whether he’s sent to the American Hockey League.
That aspect of the contract was important because both Harding and Niklas Backstrom were healthy after missing the end of last season with an illness and injury, respectively. Chances were that Kuemper would have started the season in the minors.
But that all changed because Harding is out indefinitely with a broken right foot.
The Star Tribune, meanwhile, reported that the Wild have suspended Harding because the incident took place off the ice when the goalie kicked a wall. Harding won’t get paid while he’s out with the injury.
The team would not confirm the report.
Harding won the Masterton Trophy (perseverance) in 2012-13 for playing with multiple sclerosis. He was one of the league’s top goalies last season before the need to adjust his medication forced him to the sidelines for the second season in a row.
He has one year left on his contract. Backstrom, who had an abdominal injury and a concussion last season, has two years left.
Kuemper, 24, had a 12-8-4 record, 2.43 goals-against average and a .915 save percentage last season, most of it after a January promotion. He suffered an injury in March and also during the playoffs as the Wild used five goalies in 2013-14.
The team will hit the ice on Friday with Backstrom and Kuemper as the main goalies. Ilya Brzygalov, who was acquired by the Wild last season but wasn’t re-signed during the summer, is also in camp on a professional tryout contract agreed to after the Harding injury.
i remember watching the canucks tv segments on kevin.. I wonder if he does get scooped up.
Connauton has two assists in eight games this season and had eight points in 36 games as a rookie last year but hasn't been able to earn playing time over Jamie Oleksiak or the newly recalled John Klingberg. The move could be to get him some more playing time at the AHL level, clear space for some sort of other move or just give the Stars more flexibility with the roster over the next month if he clears.
Connauton, 24, has a cap hit of $683,000 and is in the second year of a three year contract. If the plan is to send him to the Texas Stars, Dallas would need to call up another defensemen (or acquire one via other means) to carry a full roster of seven.
Sonick is a genius. I won't go into detail what's so great about his post. But it's damn good!
