Dorsett & Sbisa signed to multi-year contracts - Vancouver Canucks - News

Quote:

Vancouver, B.C. - Vancouver Canucks General Manager Jim Benning announced today that the Canucks have signed forward Derek Dorsett to a four-year contract and defenceman Luca Sbisa to three-year contract.

“Derek has been an incredibly valuable member of the Canucks roster, both on and off the ice this year,” said Vancouver Canucks General Manager, Jim Benning. “His willingness to chip in both offensively and defensively while standing up for his teammates at all times has been instrumental to our success all season.”

“Luca has been a big part of our backend all season, logging big minutes during key stretches and doing anything that is asked of him by our coaching staff,” continued Benning. “We are excited to have both Derek and Luca in the fold moving forward to continue our goal of winning today, while also having an eye to the future.”

Dorsett, 28, appeared in his first season with the Canucks this year registering single-season career-highs in both points (25) and assists (18). The 6’0”, 187 pound forward currently leads the team in hits (163) and his team-leading 169 penalty minutes rank fourth in the League. In 408 career NHL games, split between the Canucks, Rangers, and Blue Jackets, Dorsett has notched 98 points (38-60-98) and 1,024 penalty minutes. Dorsett appeared in 23 NHL playoff games with the Rangers last season, registering one assist (0-1-1) and 19 penalty minutes.

The Kindersley, Saskatchewan native was acquired from the Rangers on June 27, 2014 in exchange for the 85th selection in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. He was originally selected 189th overall by Columbus in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.

Sbisa, 25, participated in his first season with the Canucks this year recording 11 points (3-8-11) and 46 penalty minutes. He currently ranks second on the team in both hits with 149 and blocked shots with 127. In 340 career NHL games, split with the Canucks, Ducks, and Flyers, Sbisa has scored 12 goals, 55 assists (12-55-67) and logged 263 penalty minutes.

The Canucks acquired Sbisa from Anaheim on June 27, 2014 along with Nick Bonino and the 24th and 85th selection in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for Ryan Kesler and a third round pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. The 6’2” 209-pound native of Ozieri, Italy was selected 19th overall by Philadelphia in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

2.65 AAV for Dorsett ?

7seven 04-08-2015 12:43 PM

Yea Bob MacKenzie is reporting $2.65 for Dorsett. I like the way he plays, but thats too much for him on the 4th line. I'd rather allocate that money towards getting Matthias resigned.

Not a fan of retaining Sbisa either, terrified at what his cap number might be.

Tim Budong 04-08-2015 12:53 PM

Very terrified at Sbisa who makes our other brain dead dmen look like studs

I'm happy with the Dorsett signing.
it's worth it imo, you just can't replace what he brings to the table. Good on Benning for recognizing that.
they were stupid for letting Torres walk, good thing Dorsett is sticking around.
dunno what the Sbisa numbers are but one things for sure, one of Bieksa or Hamhuis will have to go in the off season.

Jmac 04-08-2015 12:55 PM

Sbisa contract is iffy, young and improving ... But definitely above his current level of play

That Dorsett contract, though :heckno:

6o4__boi 04-08-2015 12:55 PM

And btw

Dorsett > Matthias

murd0c 04-08-2015 01:01 PM

Is benning drunk?

Hondaracer 04-08-2015 01:01 PM

That's too much for Dorsett at that term. At 4 years he should be closer to 2 imo.

Sbisa is alright..he's been relatively solid but makes some big mistakes. I think you probably could have gambled with Somone a little younger and got better return. Oh well, with Dorset it's hard to replace energy but you're also paying for almost no production.

Mike Oxbig 04-08-2015 01:36 PM

The only reason canucks are playing with heart this season is because of Dorsett.

Hes the only canucks who stands up for his teammates and that was when they started playing as a team.

Uhhhhhhh... I don't know about that.

I like them both equality, Dorsett's hustling every shift, finishing every hit, and his game mentality.

And for Matthias, just the small things he does. From puck battling, board playing to his speed and hands. Reminds me of a Dale Weise minus the hitting and hands.

:alonehappy:

I like Dorsett. Little too much $$ and long term but I'll take it. He's a grinder and we need someone like that. Insane $$ for Sbisa though. yikes!

murd0c 04-08-2015 01:46 PM

Still pisses me off about trading Weise what a joke

Infiniti 04-08-2015 02:58 PM

lol kings lose to spoilers

6o4__boi 04-08-2015 03:15 PM

i miss capgeek...i'm too lazy to use all the other garbage that's out there

not sure what the Canucks are looking like salary cap wise but I wouldn't be surprised to see Matthias back, i don't know so much about Richardson. Matthias looks like he may be willing to take a pay cut to stay here.
We do need another ace centerman badly...getting demolished in the faceoff circle every game really kills momentum.

i'm just sayin, i'm a fan of both Dorsett and Matthias but if i had to pick one to stay, hands down it'll be Dorsett. At least when he's not putting up points he's trying to spark the team. Matthias has horrible starts to the season and disappears for games at a time.

XplicitLuder 04-08-2015 03:20 PM

Nhl numbers ain't too bad ^ and I hope he stays we need his size and when he keeps his feet moving he's op.

And pizza and dorsett both Dont have NTC. glad to see we aren't thowing them around anymore
