Its a retool. Great deal and term for a fifty point winger. This roster is much better then lasy years.

XplicitLuder 07-02-2014 05:41 PM

They never planned to rebuild lol

@skyline : it doesn't help the chances to get mcdavid

radioman 07-02-2014 05:41 PM

Of course its a rebuild. If the know it alls of revscene say it is then it must be.

EmperorIS 07-02-2014 05:44 PM

So I banned you from last year's Canucks thread.

Don't think it won't happen again.

6o4__boi 07-02-2014 05:50 PM

mehhhhh, needed some scoring, term is good at 2. Money i'm suspecting is because of what other teams were offering.

still have $6.7M to sign Tanev, Kassian and Vey...i'd assume Tanev would take the lion's share of that remaining cap space

The Vancouver Canucks are not just a hockey team they are also a business, this is not NHL14 were you can just sim a season, they have fans and more importantly season ticket holders. The idea of tanking is incredibly stupid, look at our neighbors in Edmonton how's that working for them? Vancouver has stocked the cupboard with prospects the last 2 drafts, and have moved pieces of the "stale core" for younger and future assets. You integrate youth into a competitive environment, one that values winning and is committed to it.

b0unce. [?] 07-02-2014 06:10 PM

I may be the only person who's happy with Vrbata lol. I think he's pretty solid and for the most part he's been consistent his entire career.

Mike Oxbig 07-02-2014 06:19 PM

Stupid to tank if it aint for generational players

b0unce. [?] 07-02-2014 06:26 PM

not good enough to make the playoffs, not bad enough to tank for a good pick either :lol

SkinnyPupp 07-02-2014 07:08 PM

OK so what's the problem with Vrbata now?

Who DO you guys want that would be a "proper rebuild"? You want to be the Oilers?

All I see here are empty threats..

dbaz 07-02-2014 07:23 PM

so with vrbata now.. we have burrows, vrbata, kassian, hansen, dorsett, jensen(can play lw, but has been horrible there), vey(also c) as rw's. who gets traded? i assume jensen has a full year in ahl to prove he can have a complete solid year, and that horvat may be handed the lw spot as that was his original position.

I think Vrbata is a great pick up and going to be perfect for the canucks. I swear no matter the move would be you guys would bitch about every little thing and the negativity gets so annoying sometimes I don't even want to click on this thread half of time.

SkinnyPupp 07-02-2014 07:30 PM

I guess people want the Canucks to be the laughing stock of the league for 5 years, then have nothing but great #1 picks which means auto-cup! . Look how well it's working for the Oilers after all! :derp:

Or they can be like the Blackhawks, Bruins, or Kings, and retool the team for a few years before making a run.

punkwax 07-02-2014 07:31 PM

^ I agree the negativity is a little too much at times and I also like the Vrbata signing.. but I always want to check the thread :lol

pastarocket 07-02-2014 07:35 PM

The 2 year term for Vrbata is good.

This is a good pick up.

Tanev, Kassian, and Vey are next.

Get it done Benning!

Iceman_2K 07-02-2014 07:38 PM

Given whats happened to the Oilers, I'm not sure if the tanking technique really works as well as it used to, especially for a Canadian team that's not won a cup before.

Hondaracer 07-02-2014 07:40 PM

Vrbottom?

Decent sized euro winger, relatively consistent, albeit on a Coyotes team that makes most players look pretty good because contributions are done by committee there always.

5 mill is an over payment but probably what he had to get in order to come here [which should be troublesome in itself]

As for Iwantaskylines points of a team being a "business" it obviously is, but when ownership gets involved in decisions in order to make revenue on what, 1 playoff round IF THAT? it gets to the point where you need management to build for a long term outlook, not some shitty half ass patch job. The terrible, terrible, fans of Vancouver hold alot of the blame here because as revenue drops, the team has to make these desperate jabs of faith to try and stem off the indifference the team brings on.

As much as people hate on the Leafs, they can go on their merry way with whatever choices they make trying to win a cup because they are -never- concerned with revenue. Leafs could miss the playoffs for the next 20 years and there would still be a lifetime waiting list for seasons tickets

Canucks on the other hand, ONE season where blame finally comes around and a 5 year waiting list not only turns into no waiting list, the team is literally begging people for renewals and new subscribers? lol this fan base is a fucking joke.

Yea, drafting Kane and Toews was a retool...

edit* sorry, if you meant "retool" after they won a cup, i can somewhat agree. But the "fall-off" for these teams was nothing, they were always contenders. It was a matter of 1-2 key players to win a cup. I dont recall in watching hockey in the last 15 years a team that fell from grace as hard as the Canucks.

And when everyone always goes on "MG this, MG that" Honestly, i think ownership is let off the hook for many of these choices that have brought us to this point.

In all honesty that was luck since players like them don't come around very often

SkinnyPupp 07-02-2014 07:49 PM

Kane and Toews maybe isn't the greatest example but the team was rebuilt from the management up at the same time, including bringing on Quenneville and Scotty Bowman.

But yeah the point still remains, you don't tank the team to collect picks... Well maybe you do if you know you can draft the next Sidney Crosby :fullofwin:

murd0c 07-02-2014 07:53 PM

The trick is getting the right younger players and surround them by the right veteran older players. I think thats what Benning is doing and the reason why he's not making a number of signings is some of the younger players are going to play on the team and with Willie coming from the AHL he will be able to get the most out of them compaired to what we have seen in the past hopefully.

6o4__boi 07-02-2014 08:03 PM

anyone know if there's an NMC on the Vrbata contract?

Tim Budong 07-02-2014 08:11 PM

Vrbata's contract is structured similar to Millers

4m+1m bonus

As for this retooling. There has to be one more salary dump coming to get be able to inject enough youth on this squad to get it going
