$3k~ car

My buddy is looking to get his first car. Budget is around $3500, he's still a student so he's looking for something somewhat reliable to get back and fourth as a DD. Any suggestions ?

Your friend could probably pick up a decent condition integra for that price, I might be biased but I would pick an integra over the civic. The integra feels more refined and sporty compared to a honda civic.

I'd say Civic/Teg too.

If he doesn't care about modding and just wants something cheap and reliable, 2000ish Corolla.

VW's can be finicky. Cooling issues, electrical issues.

+1 for CorollaTegCivic. Corolla for sure if he's not into modding. Those things go for a long time with minimal issues.

a golf in that price range is gonna have issues imo. Sure so is a honda..but much more reliable. Id say to stick to either a corolla, a civic, a teg, or a prelude

corolla -- timing chain vs timing belt on civic, plus they're generally cheaper

read my mind with a corolla. if he's a student i'm assuming it's strictly A to B.

OP should really give more information about what his buddy looks for in a car.

Does he want something fast? Something fun? Something reliable? Does he need space for stuff, like a hockey bag, or a dog? Hard to really suggest a good fit for someone without more information.

I suggested the EL because it's a great cheap (civic parts) & reliable vehicle with 4 doors if you need to haul friends around, trunk fit my hockey bag NP etc. Step up from the civic, leather, heated mirrors, even the wiper fluid line is insulated or heated (cant remember) as they are manufactured in Canada and they did this for Canadian winters. Not needed in the lower mainland, but I thought it was kinda cool that they took the Honda Domani and kinda made it Canadian. Not available in the US, I used to always get comments whenever I crossed the line..

Anyway, provide more info on what your friend wants in a vehicle and you will get responses tailored to his needs.

For $3500 car, the insurance is probably the major cost concern rather than the car. In terms of insurance, Corolla will probably be cheaper.

If he wants reliable and cheap I'd go with the Corolla/Camry as mentioned above, Civic/Integra/etc are more likely to be driven hard but on the flip side even replacement engines are cheap and plentiful.

I'd avoid a Prelude for 2 reasons (assuming we're talking 97-01): 1) if it's an auto, the tranny WILL blow up. 2) they take 91 which is more expensive, plus most people don't know that so they've been putting in 87 it's whole life
