Such a tough call. I could go either way really. For me it would come down to how much I like the car and it's value now and later. If I really like it but it will continue to depreciate until it's worth fuck all then I would have to really think about it. If the value is there then I would pull the trigger because you can always get out relatively unscathed if the debt becomes too much to handle.

I'm always looking at E30 M3's, 993/964/930 P-cars and NSX's. Those I can justify as they are likely to be worth what I paid, maybe slightly less due to suck costs but most likely more as they will continue to appreciate. Easily justifiable for me due to the value now and later.

However, I also look at Buick Grand National's and GMC Syclone's with the same excitement. I don't believe that the same value theory is there for these cars so I would be hesitant to pull the trigger.

Have you ever driven this model of car? Before you do anything else look at the actual car to make sure it stacks up to the ad, and drive it to see if it stacks up to what you want think it will be like.

It's not like it's a black and white decision. You don't have to be extreme and choose between a Camry and a Supra.

Also, it's not linear; as in, your satisfaction (or 'utility' for the economists) doesn't rise proportionally with the amount of money you spend.

For example, back when I was single with no kids, I really wanted a NSX. I couldn't justify it financially, so I ended up buying a 91 MR2 (now sold). Do I still want a NSX? Sure. But after riding in one, I would say I had 80% of the satisfaction for 20% of the cost from the MR2.

I'm sure you could find something economical that could keep you reasonably happy.

At the end of day, you have to be able to sleep at night with what you do. If having no savings or some debt keeps you up, I wouldn't do it.

I think people are making this out to be a harder decision than it really is..

You just need to consider if this decision will negatively affect more important decisions in the future.

eg. If you spend this much now on a car, how will it affect your ability to buy a house/support a family.. Assuming that you deem those things more important.
If those aren't as important, what is, and ask yourself the same thing.

If there will be no meaningful negative impact on whatever it is you deem more important, then go for it.

No, that car was sold on Monday.

Car I'm looking at is straight up 2 door sports car. More fuel, higher insurance but would be spring / summer / El Nino driven

I guess based on that alone, it would very well be my mid life crisis car.

I HATE debt, but if my dream car fell into my lap tomorrow, and I could do it, it be cashing in TSFAs, RRSPs, and taking out loans at the capacity I needed to if I really felt that it was going to be a "dream come true" kinda car. If its not that car, don't bother.
Exactly this.

I know you're going out of the way to tell us what car you want... but IMO it all comes down to how you feel about said car. If this is just a cool car that looks nice b/c it is new/fun/a girl magnet, then I personally would not waste money and put yourself in more debt for it.

But if it was a DREAM car, i.e, something you've dreamt about since you were a kid, then go for it. Money is nice, but sometimes actually living your dreams is nicer. I was saving up for a motorcycle + lessons + gear just to ride with my buddies until I saw an AE86 (my dream "first car" since I was 14) and bought it 2 days after I first saw the CL ad. Haven't looked back since.

They keep me grounded and keep me sane. It would be a horrible idea for me to have kids given my finances so my cars are the next best thing.

But some days I think of selling one and using the funds towards making a small music studio with better gear / tools and really push my creative boundaries (assuming I have any).

post from different thread. maybe dont buy the car? lol
