That time of the year when I watch 80s and 90s Christmas commercials on youtube

MG1 12-21-2020 04:49 PM

I remember going there often. Location on Kingsway. I think it became a carpet place. Not sure if building is there anymore. Mopac, Beaver Lumber, Harvey's, and Wally's were in the area, as well.

Spectre_Cdn 12-21-2020 04:55 PM

There used to be a Consumers Distributing on Ackroyd Rd in Richmond, where the old Cineplex Odéon and A&W used to be. I remember ogling at the toys in the catalogue, like remote control cars and play sets.

I remember going to that location several times with my dad to find a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle that wasn't Rafael. Disappoint! On the other hand. I always got an immature laugh from the "personal massager" vibrator in their catalog.
:awesom:

StylinRed 12-21-2020 07:14 PM

I think we got my Sega or Nintendo from consumers! Couldn't remember where it was located but it wasn't far from home, kingsway iirc

SkinnyPupp 12-21-2020 07:31 PM

For me it was all about the Sears Christmas catalogues

Now i need to find them for rent, serious xmas throwback couch session incoming

Presto 12-21-2020 09:18 PM

It's a shame that none of them came back for a 2nd season. Mission Hill was my favorite of the bunch. I really liked Oblongs, too. Clone High was meh.

Jmac 12-21-2020 09:18 PM

The last one is Clone High. Not sure about the other two. No idea where to rent.

Undergrads was dope af on Teletoon back in the day.

Yep, the current tenant is Staples; it was previously Chapters, and many years/tenants ago it was Consumers Distributing. Lots of fond memories going there as a kid!

donk. 12-21-2020 11:07 PM

Speaking of undergrads.... There was a kickstarter in 2018 for 120K for a movie
Supposably its in the early stages of script writing as of mid 2020

Excitement level: 2001

For me it was the Turbo Bandit I wanted so bad. Or any of those RC cars in the 80s and 90s.

One year we finally got some. Corded. They went so slow and you had to follow them around. Also the one my brother got didn't even have a steer function, to make it turn, you had to go in reverse which would turn the wheels left to get around obstacles.

Life as a poor kid LUL

My brother was pretty big into rc's when we were kids. He progressed to gas powered pretty quick. But I still remember the first one he brought home. The Tamiya Grasshopper.

Edit

winson604 12-23-2020 11:16 AM

2 of my favorite snacks when I was a kid were Thunder Crunch Parmesan flavor and Jimmys beef jerky.

I bought a bag of Kettle Chips the other day cause it caught my eye as they had Parmesan Garlic flavor and damn it was as close as I remember being to the Thunder Crunch I loved. Sadly nothing has ever come close to Jimmys.

Oh yes I remember Thunder Crunch. Now I get my fix from Kettle Chips or other brand.

I have a Tamiya radio controlled car from the 90s and it still works.

punkwax 12-23-2020 01:41 PM

May have posted this already but the only chips I really miss are these:

Lays has a version similar to Thunder Crunch. I like regular salted and jalapeno. But they don't use peanut oil so it doesn't have that hint of peanut flavour FeelsBadMan

I used to like Sun Chips back in the day, the green bag. Unfortunately when I tried it again a while ago, it was nothing like I remember. They probably use "healthy" oil now and "whole" grains FailFish

The turbo hopper somehow slipped past my parents defenses when it came to getting a toy that needed batteries. They hated buying batteries. I think we spent more time playing with it dead than with power. But man - if we could get our hands on some AA's we were in for a good time.

The neighbour who never seemed to have a hard time scoring Duracell's had the ultimate kids dream RC - the Typhoon. Of course it was actually terrible to use, but it was dope as hell.

Mostly though it was lego for me. The sets didn't stay together for long, I had much more fun modding out my own custom builds. Long before lego launched all of their new themes, I'd turned all of my Space toys into underwater vehicles after watching The Abyss.

My Cosmic Fleet Voyager is still on my desk in front of me right now :

So true. I miss it. That and UBC cinnamon buns. Nobody has been able to recreate it.
