Garage Door Springs Where is a good place in the Lower Mainland to buy garage door springs and winding bars? I don't have much choice here in Squamish and I was quoted $300 to replace both mine, so I think I may tackle it on my own if I can find the parts. |
Don't bother doing it on your own just pay the $300 to get it done, those springs are nasty and can honestly kill you. |
My garage door spring broke in half a couple of weeks back and had to get it replaced. I'd recommend you get it professionally done especially since you don't know wtf you're doing. It costed me $200 but it was worth the "investment". Got mine replaced by: Garage Door Depot Burnaby/New Westminster: 604-526-1086 Ask for Ross if he's available |
I replaced one of the springs on my parents' garage door about 10 years ago. It wasn't difficult. There's probably plenty of YouTube videos on it. You have to respect the amount of force that's being stored up as you tighten it up. |
Yeah, I watched the video before I posted. Looks like parts would be about $176 including winding rods, so the $300 is okay watching someone else fight "the force". Spoke to a guy today that does taxes, but he installed garage doors for 20 years prior. He broke his arm twice due to the springs. |
Get a professional to do it right. And, they know which type/brand of spring that will last the longest, because the springs will need to be replaced in the future again. Good luck. |
Take a look through my thread for some leads! :) http://www.revscene.net/forums/69565...r-openers.html |
get someone else to do it, I was gonna do it myself but hired someone to get it done within 10 mins for 150 bucks. |
I would also not mess around with them if I were you. I have seen some nasty injuries from these things. $300 is not to bad considering after tax the parts are around $200 |
did my own. picked up the springs from garage door depot. made some bars with 1/2" steel bars cut to 1 foot lengths and wrapped with electrical tape for grip lol. i'd say get someone else to do it. |
Do you need garage door repair? Garage opener repair? Spring Repair? got this guy to do my dads. Figured for the cost and time and risk of injury, I would pay someone. The spring repair was only 140? around there (single spring, only). Great deal IMO. Not sure if he goes to Squamish, but give him a ring. 604-374-8034 Guy was fast and knowledgeable. He came on a sunday too! without charging extra, or was it a Saturday, either way, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to family and friends. Yeah you can do it yourself, but the cost of the spring and the two needle thingys, and your time (both slow and watching youtube videos) and risk....pay someone. How often do these things break? once every 15 years? Personally, I rather not have a high tension spring whip at my face, even with safety glasses. |
Don't fuck with the springs if you don't know what you're doing. Those things are dangerous. |
^ Agreed, I told the local guy to go ahead and order the springs, get'r done. |
