Old video, but shows that even on ice, winter tires do help significantly.
I've been hearing too many people say even if they had winter tires, it was icy so it wouldn't have mattered.

And the classic:
On Thursday, people were told to go home early in the afternoon and WFH if they want as the snow was coming down. When a bunch of us were leaving, I was making small talk and just asked a coworker if he had winter tires. He's like No... but I have AWD.

Friday morning, I find out from my manager that he got into an accident on the way home yesterday. Just lost control and slid into a curb. Minor incident, but sounds like he damaged enough that it needs to go into a shop for repairs.

Sigh..

So many people in these videos of cars crashing etc. are just fully locked brakes and Jesus take the wheel types.

Some of these videos the accident and damage could have been completely avoided had the driver just let off the brake and steered out of it.

I think it really comes down to, as someone here has mentioned before, a huge majority of drivers have no sense of control or how to feel traction through the pedals. They simply think right is go, left is stop.

lmao wrong thread.

Here's a video of me passing a hummer in a snow storm on DWS06 on a AP1.

I bought some XIce Snows the next day since I was already tired of all the hydroplaning in the rain and yes ... all 4 fit in the car.

I came here to say that Blizzaks (WS80) suck. Understeer like a mofo and yadadadada... but it turns out it was just too warm for Blizzaks. In the last week, with the severe negative temps, the tire feels great. Lots of confidence and with all the brine on the road I can actually put down power - instead of a rolling 5th gear burnout lol

That's a really aggressive tire for Vancouver .... tbh I wonder who the Blizzak really is for with its weird compound (only first 40% are really winter).

I'm not sure if "Nordic" tires are a real sub category of winter tires. It's a term I heard being thrown around before. But Blizzaks would fit that, as it's made for heavy snow.

Big channel gaps in the tread for gripping snow, but that also means less contact patch and more tread squirming when there isn't heavy snow or when the ground is just frosty. I personally wouldn't use Blizzaks unless I know I'm going to encounter heavy snow on a regular basis. Or I guess in your case, maybe severe negative temps. Maybe the rubber compound is more optimal in extreme cold compared to other winter tires.

Nokian's got a new all weather tire coming out - the WRG5. That tread pattern looks very winter-y to my eye - I wonder how well it holds up in warmer conditions.

Headline: Michelin CrossClimate 2 Is No Longer The King Of All-Season Tires According To Tyre Reviews

All well and good except that all the tires that beat the CC2 aren't available in North America (far as I know).

They'll come a bit later - we get the European tires a bit after they are introduced over there usually.

Joking aside: Aren't Michelin CC2s an all-weather tire, not all-season?

Not necessarily as Pirelli (Weatheractive) and Bridgestone (Weatherpeak) have introduced North American specific all weather tires that are different than the tires in this test. Continental might bring their all weather tire over though they still haven't brought over the v1 version.

In Europe they're sold as all-seasons but here they are known as all-weathers. It's like how in Europe a winter tire is our performance winter and a "Nordic" winter is our winter tire (Blizzak, X-Ice)

Michelin ain't worried. You know they've been sitting on a CC3 this whole time and when they release it it's gonna crush everyone else all over again .

Btw you guys are still reading Jalopnik? Isn't The Autopian a drop-in replacement for it?

Those with low profile CC2's, can you confirm whether they have rim protection or not? Not a deal breaker but not really a fan of bubbly looking sidewalls. It's between the CC2 and the Cinturato WeatherActives. Similar price and performance but the WeatherActives have rim protection.

I've been looking at the CC2 for years but they didn't have a 275 width... now they do and I find out there's no rim protection though some folks say the low profile models do...

What size did you order? I've been looking for 255/45/r19 at costco for the CC2 but it's been perpetually out of stock
