I had snow tires in the 9 yr DOT range and the rubber got really hard. So yah, about 7 yr life is a good principle +/- a yr or 2 at most.

I guess before the idea of 7 years became popular in the last 10 years we were all just driving around on ice skates then, who knows how many died.

That said I wasn't really talking about snow tires, wrong thread I guess that's my bad

All else being equal, sure. But loads of people are rolling around on such janky crap that the tire compound being in sub-optimal condition due to age is the least of their concerns. A 2015 winter that actually has tread will do a lot better than the bald all seasons they currently have on. Every time I've sold a set of crappy tires that I price and advertise as rollers/the value is in the rims someone shows up on something way shittier and says they're going to be using them.

you should work in PR or marketing or something. They are squandering your talents at the port.

Good 'ol smear campaigning, slowly but surely undermining the winter tire movement. Casting seeds of confusion and doubt.

You are making me want to toss my Viking7s and run back into the warmly eyebrowed embrace of CC2.

I'm not casting any shade on you - I was just arguing with 68style regarding his opinion that "tire age doesn't matter".

I had a similar experience with my winters - I bought a used set off someone and by year 8 and 9 it had lost a lot of grip. Traction was still ok but it sure felt greasy and rock hard by the time it reached that stage. It creeps up on you but when you get the new ones on it's almost shocking how much more grip you get back even on dry/wet surfaces.

TBH I did not notice significant degradation in the tire when I ran them last year but figured since I live in a hilly area and my driveway is steep AF, probably better off to not cheap out on risking them another year and getting a new set.

The DOT on my new Conti's are from earlier this year

I didn't say it doesn't matter, but it's not like they turn into pumpkins at 7 years on the dot... people act like they're suddenly no good... if an average tire is stored in garage in the PNW you should be able to get 10 years out of it no problem.

I happen to know of at least 1 manufacturer that tells its sales reps here that they hve no issue with honouring full warranty even on tires that have sat 2-3 years prior to sale.

Yes, because those 2-3 years that it sat before sale was generally indoors in a warehouse.

I hesitate to give any sort of time frame that tires "are good for" because you see weird shit happen - a lot of the newer Michelin tires have sidewall cracking already after a couple of years, etc. No matter stored indoors or on the car.

Always inspect the tires that you plan to buy.

Yeah definitely. When I had bought my FJ Cruiser at ~4 years old, the rubber on all 5 original tires were cracked all over. Despite still having lots of tread.

So yah, buyers are quite upset that when they buy a set of tires, the DOT is like 2 yrs old. So imagine buying a set of snow tires this season stamped with manufacture date Jan or Feb of 2022. If you want to resell them later, buyer only cares what is DOT ... not when you bought them. Old DOT affects resell value as well.

If new is in the budget, reach out to OverDrive in Richmond. They might have winter tire + wheel packages available.

if u say that bicbaws (or a guy on RS since there's only a few of us here that are active on RS and whatsapp chats) recommended you, they might treat you better... or treat you worse. I'd like to think better since I'm pretty involved when I send clients to them as I don't like to make a bad recommendation.
